I am going to start a build thread for our new all black Intimidator 3
Using the new Rocketpoxy.
First check to make sure you have all of the parts.
parts 1.jpg
Next clean all of the parts.

if you are going the paintless design you will need to mask off the area's you are going to sand.

YOU BUILD ROCKETS???!!!?? :eyepop:

I thought CJ or Jason built your stuff!?

Next you will need to sand anywhere you are going to put glue, entire motor mount tube, inside of the booster fin area, fins glue area, ect.
I used 80 grit for my build.

Next notch the Centering ring for the optional kevlar bridal.
int 3 010.JPG

Then slide the Centering ring over the Bridal and the bridal and Cr over the motor mount tube.
int 3 011.JPG
then mix up some of the new rocketpoxy 50/50 I did it by eye and glue the Cr/bridal to the motor mount tube.
At the same time I glued the tails for the bridal to save time.
int 3 012.JPG
tape them down and let dry before the next step on the booster.

besides I wanted to try the new Glue.

This cant end well. Tim glues his phone to his head ala CJ style. Is what I read when I saw this...

Glad your jumping into the build thread ring...

WOW.....go Tim....GO!

Yuup, it's him. I recognize the feet!
Although the fins are HAND sanded, that surprises me.
Usually goes straight for the POWER tools.

That was a good one............

Tim,
This is promising to be a longgggggggggg build thread...........

Tim
I did a few tests with the new glue. Just eyed the mix and seems to be good stuff. A lot like JB weld. I didn't add the black color to it.

I did a trial fit of the fins and the slots were a little tight so a little sanding with some 80 grit and they fit fine.
int3 2 002.JPG

I am using the old PML trick of tape on the back Cr ( so it can be removed later) you may have to sand the ring for the tape to fit.
int3 2 001.JPG

Slide the MMT assembly into the booster, make sure the bridal is not under one of the fin slots.
I lined the bottom of the MMT up with the bottom of the booster as I am not using a tailcone on this one. If you are using a tailcone you will need to have the correct measurement on the location of the MMT. Slide the back CR in place.

Have your masking tape ready for the next step once you start its hard to stop with out making a mess.

butter up the root edge of one of the fins with the new Rocketpoxy slide the fin into one of the slots, I lined it up by eye some of you may want to use a fin guide. and tape into place.
int3 2 004.JPG

lay the booster off the edge of your table and repeat the last step.
repeat one more time. I like to stand the booster up on the front end to let it dry at this point.

I started laying down the exterior fillets last night and I have to say I am impressed with the Rocketpoxy .
It is very forgiving with the mixing ratio and lays a real nice fillet .
I just added a little of the Black pigment and the poxy turned jet black right away.
I woke up this morning and went to pull the tape from the fillets I put down last night and the tape would not come up.
I am in the process of cutting and scraping to get the tape off from under the over flow of the fillet.
Lesson learned make sure to pull the masking tape before glue goes completely hard. I may have to sand now.
BTW I can not get the leftover glue out of the plastic reusable cups. I guess they are not so reusable.
That's all for now

Plastic reusable cups? Are these the kind that most epoxies can be peeled out of? If so, then I guess that's a good sign for bonding to plastics.

With this build I am going to do the exterior fillets next.
I left the tape on from sanding and it will fork for my fillets also.
lay your booster on a table with the fins hanging off one side. you will want to weight down the front end so it doesn't come off while you are gluing(been there done that not fun).
int3-3 005.JPG
int3-3 006.JPG
I am using a scape piece of 38mm body tube to form the fillets.
int3-3 008.JPG
you want to lay down a nice line of poxy the entire length of the fin before you pull with you shaping tool.
Remember when you get to the end of the fin to turn your tool around the corner for a nice blend with the other side.
If you don't get a clean fillet you can always clean it up if its still wet with alcohol.
This is what it should look like.
int3-3 001.JPG
With the new Rocketpoxy you will have to wait about an hour to come back and pull the tape and do the next set.
repeat for the other fins.

What is Rocketpoxy? Is it similar to proline 4500 epoxy with the same consistancy and temp rating? Is wildman going to carry it?

I like to use my left over glue for the other small things as I go along.
with this I will do the optional vent band.
First you mark center of the coupler then measure out from that to half of your vent band the one I am using is 1.5 wide so measure out 3/4 from your center line.
int 3 013.JPG

Now take some glue and lay a small bead around the coupler staying close to one line.
int3-3 012.JPG

Slide your vent band on the coupler up to the bead of poxy.
Once you hit the poxy twist as you are moving it through to the center to smear the glue around the coupler for a good bond.
int3-3 013.JPG

once you have it up to your second set of marks stop and clean up the excess glue (Its a lot easier to do now instead of later)

Rocketpoxy is a new product that one of our local fliers has come up with we have been passing it around for a month or so amongst us and I have to say it has held up to what he has advertised.

This is the first I have used it and I am impressed.
Its the consistency of creamy peanut butter, holds it's shape and sticks real good on everything I have tried so far.
I will do a product review as soon as I am done with this build thread.

Yes Wildman's is carrying it.

RocketPoxy

If you read about it on my thread post #40: quart kit=65.00 pint kit=35.00

Yes that is an error on Wildman site.

Back to the build.
Next I did the nose cone
Sand the inside nose cone where the coupler slides in.
Sand the nose cone coupler on the outside that slides into the nose cone.
sand inside the N/C coupler for the coupler bulk plate.
Now you are ready to start gluing.
Put a nice bead of Poxy inside the coupler on the edge.
int3-3 009.JPG
next slide the bulk plate into the coupler.
I put 3 1/4 nuts down on the table.
int3-3 010.JPG
turn the coupler assembly over and push down.
int3-3 011.JPG
This will give you a 1/4 space for your upper fillet and push the bulk plate through the glue and leave a nice fillet behind the bulk plate.
Set it a side to dry.

While the glue is drying on the nose cone coupler I started working on the inside fillets.
For this step you will need an 1/8 inch wooden dowel rod.
Mix up about an ounce or 2 of Rocketpoxy.( no need for the pigment here)
You will only use about 18 inches of the dowel rod, its easier if you cut or break it off to that size.
get about 2 inches of the dowel covered in Poxy by spinning the dowel in the glue.
int3-4 015.JPG
slide the dowel inside the booster in between the MMT and the body tube trying not to touch the edges ( you will but you can clean it up later)
once you get to the front push the dowel in the corner of the fin and MMt turn and slowly pull back. this will leave a nice fillet behind.
I had to do this 3 times per fillet do the entire fillet the length of the fin.
int3-4 016.JPG
Repeat on all of the fins.
While you have glue all over the MMT now is a good time to put the back centering ring on.
Put a bead of glue around the inside edge of the booster and on the outside of the MMT.
int3-4 017.JPG
Slide the Centering ring into the booster until the ring hits the back of the fins.
int3-4 019.JPG

I still had glue all over so choose now to put my Aeropack on.
spread a small bead of glue around the inside edge of you retainer then slide it on the MMT.
int3-4 020.JPG
As you can see there was glue inside the retainer now clean up any glue you have inside the mmt and anywhere else it doesn't belong.
