    Midgets Large and Small

A Large Midget -- now there's a concept. Kind of like "jumbo shrimp." In this and the following posts are some photos of two of my Midgets, all dressed up in their Sunday best. The smaller of the two (red) is my K-40 clone, replacing the original one that I only got to fly once back in 1970...

Do You Use Free Cloud Storage, like Google Drive or DropBox?

I am curious about the new cloud storage services, like Google Drive and DropBox. I have recently read about them. Most seem to offer a certain amount of storage space for free, before charging for additional space. Who uses these services, and what kinds of things do you store on them? I am...

    AMROCS - Wombat (K-5) Gallery

Here are a couple of my attempts at building a rocket that boosts AND then glides. The best that I have been able to do so far is to achieve half of that equation. In the left is my clone of the AMROCS Wombat. Next to it is a clone of the Estes Astron Falcon. Both gliders do wonderfully...

    Return to flight

At the prodding of He of the Piscine Cranium, herein find my first-ever launch report for TRF. Submitted for your approval. On Saturday April 14 2012 I attended the ASTRE Spring Fling sport launch in Johnstown, NY. It was the first ASTRE club launch that I had attended since August of 2010, my...

    SSRS Lasor Series

Anyone remember this minimum-diameter mid-power rockets from the 1980s? Like many other rocketry-related things from the past three decades, I learned about these rockets and the company when I saw one of the company's (by then rechristened as Crown Rocket Technology) catalogs on Ninfinger. I...

    Deal on Rocket Storage Box/Transporter

Spotted today at my local Aldi's: very large, sturdy rocket storage box and transporter. Price: $23. :) OK, OK, to the layman, this item might be called an Artificial Christmas Tree Storage Box, but here on TRF we know all what its real purpose is. ;) SealTite brand. 48" long, 17" wide, and...

    Where I live

Living way out in the boonies does occasionally have its nicer moments. Here is short video clip of autumn in my 6 million acre neighborhood... The clip was created by Vimeo member rooftopmedia. 33542837

Estes - (Mini Brute) Javelin (#0815) Gallery

Next up, the #0815 Mini Brute Combo, consisting of the Javelin (left) and the Super Flea (right). I built a 433% upscale of the Javelin for my Level 1 certification (Javelin XL). A similarly upscaled Super Flea is in the works (Superior Flea). Post copied to gallery with permission

    Mini Brute Mania!

I don't just clone FSI models. From time to time in the past few years I have also built the occasional clone of an Estes Mini Brute. In 1971 Estes Industries began to sell the 13mm diameter, 1.75" long mini T motors. They replaced the Series III "shorty" motors. When standard-length 18mm...

    FSI - Penetrator Gallery

Finally got around to painting and putting decals on my four year old Flight Systems MRK-1 Penetrator clone. Airframe, motor mount, nose cone and launch lug were supplied by Semroc. Plywood fins were supplied by me. The decals were obtained from Excelsior rocketry.

When rocketmoms have birthdays, who lights the candles?

I don't know, but I have a feeling that we'll find out pretty soon... Happy birthday, Lisa! :w:

Masking techniques for tube fin interiors

Split off from another thread: Please post your thoughts and suggestions. I have tried this once so far, with less-than-perfect results. I have several rockets reproduced from a vintage series than I'm going to want to do this with. Good subject for discussion, I hope. Thanks in advance.

Flight Systems, Inc. - Nova Gallery

Another rocket from my FSI cloning project. This was actually the first one I built, back in December 2006 - January 2007. It was the rocket that kicked off the project. I love using 1/16" birch plywood for fins. They are hard to cut but easy to finish and wow are they ever durable. The upper...

    Question about smartphones

Are Java-based smartphones any good? Or are they dogs? These are phones that use a proprietary, non-standard OS (not iOS, Android, WebOS. Windows Mobile or Symbian) but which add functionality by being able to run apps written for Java. I've been looking at upgrading my two-month old prepaid...

    Remembering Gemini 3

On March 23, 1965, Gemini 3, piloted by John Young and commanded by Virgil "Gus" Grissom, carried out its brief but historic mission. 46 years ago today. The mission was only 4 orbits in duration, but the crew didn't waste any time making history. At the end of its first orbit, Gemini 3...

What is your club's draw at launches?

I hope that I have this in the right forum. If not, feel free to move it to a more appropriate location. Over the past couple of years I have started to become aware that the typical attendance at regular launches by some clubs is stupendously large, at least from my experience. So I'm trying...

    Fliskits - Tumbleweed Gallery

How does the Tumble Weed fly on a MicroMaxx II? Well, that's when the hilarity begins. Don't worry, it does boost and recover safely. I use a clothespin to stand it off about halfway up on my 1/8" launch rod to cut down on the drag loss. At ignition it shoots up completely straight...
