Finished my Arapahoe E upscale the Arapahoe I, it only took 2 years. Nose cone is a recycle from an Estes Big Daddy or Leviathan that I bought at a Tripoli Vegas yard sale on TRF a while back, the tailcone is a PNC-300K from Balsa Machining, airframe is T300-34 from BMS (actually all parts are either Estes or BMS). The rocket is built dual deploy, and the fins are lightweight laminate of 1/8" baltic birch with 1/16" balsa skins, papered and rounded. 29mmt and the mmt tube is just about the exact same length as a AT 29/360. All vinyl (black lettering, stripes, and pieces and white Thunderbirds) was cut on my wifes Cricut.]

Stunning!

That is freakin beautiful, congrats. I love the Arapahoe, and it looks good in green. My L2 was on a 4” version in white and purple, great flyer.

It was your 4" that first brought the design to my attention and it is an amzing looking rocket. I have yet to see an Arapahoe in any white and other color scheme that wasnt beautiful. To be exact iirc you were the one who pointed out that the tailcone had to be a longer ratio than the nosecone. For my BT60 clone it was a balsa version of the PNC-60NA nosecone (nose used on Estes Patriot missle ) and the tailcone was the balsa tailcone from BMS for the V2.

I believe he is referring to the Ogive aspect ratio, length to base dia. So, in case of the Estes Big Daddy NC, it is a 3:1 Ogive, 9" length x 3" dia. That means the tailcone (uncut) needs to be 12".
Exactly, the Balsa Machining Service PNC-300K/ Mercury Engineering 3" nose cone and iirc Apogee all sell the same about 4:1 nose cone, that with about 1.5" removed from the tip makes a nice tailcone with a 29mm motor mount. Sorry I wasn't clear about that earlier.

Yeah, I know what he means, but not why. Why does a tail cone's ratio have to be longer than the nose cone's?

I mocked up my original clone of the Arapahoe E using same ratio nose and tail cones it looked just wrong kinda like a stretched V2 with odd fins (well a V2 with short NC and TC). The model is about as aerodynamic as a brick so the tailcone aspect ratio is entirely for looks, any gain from a boattail due to base drag reduction is lost due to the huge fin area and those long strakes. One of these days I need to build on without strakes just to see how much the difference in performance is.

Oh yeah, I remember now. That longer tailcone really does complete the look.

Very SWEET!!!!! Nice Work....

SeaHawk Project

Last night I used a General Purpose super glue on plastic fins... Needless to say I had to pull them apart today as the glue did not adhere... Once the Snow stops in the morning I will trek to Hobby Lobby for the right glue to get caught up..

In between pulling fins apart I was able to get motor mount put together... Yeah!!!

I have read through many threads today and looking at future rocket builds to move up into E class and higher... Still looking for a Starter Kit from AeroTech....

I'd love to build an Arapahoe E from scrathc for a 24mm motor. Are there any plans available somewhere & maybe a parts list? It is one of the sweetest designs I have ever seen. :)

You know your bitten by the Launch Bug when every Rocket kit in basement is on the table to build... Choosing one to work on was easy as the SeaHawk stood out.. But As I work on it I'm getting that bite in the Butt hard to take a leap to next level...

I have been researching a few rockets to get me going into the next stage from Model rockets into high power rockets. SO the next steps are in play this morning..

1. Researching any Local Club in the KCMO area very few here.. One possibility... Sent email out to them to see if I can make it to their next meeting... Last thing I want is to start a club..
2. Research NAR/TRIPOLI registration..
3. Researching different Rockets that catch my eye and budget. AeroTech/LOC have my undivided attention right now.
4. Youtubed a few videos on 3 Rocket kits I Fancy
5. After watching a build video by John Coker the LOC IV (LOC 4) im seriously leaning to this kit and some of the mods he completed.

So now to get my plan of attack into action...
