Good luck! And start a build thread so we can all follow along. Look up this dude's threads (qquake2k). He's built 4,002,120 rockets. He has scratch building down to a Tee (nut). They are clean, functional, fun, high quality, and WAY over built  So going too high should not be an issue!

Good luck!

I thought I was still under 4,000,000. I'm glad you're keeping count!

Use the Estes Mega Der Red Max. The Pro II series rockets are made with some beefy material. It will give you some advanced skills and it looks cool. Epoxy everything instead of using glue and build strong fillets. This is especially true in the fin lamination part of the build. Those who use water-based glues complain of warping. If you use 5-minute epoxy, they set a lot faster and there is no warping. It has a 29mm motor mount and should fly with I's if you build it well enough. And you can find the kit online for about $60-$65 if you look hard enough.

nice build!

I considered using my PSII Argent for jr. L1, but decided against it, I really like the looks of the MDRM!

Now that I know pretty much where I'm going with this, I've got a few questions about recovery. first, how long of a shock cord do I need? I'll be using 1/8 in. tubular kevlar from GLR. 15 ft?

Depends on your liking. some people use the shortest cord possible (like 10 ft), others, like me, would use a 30 foot cord in That size rocket.

If that is a stock length, 15 should be fine. 3 to 5 times the length of the rocket. Tho as long as it packs loose enough, more never hurts. Captain uses really long shock cords IIRC.

3-5 times the length would come out to 15- 25 ft. I've got plenty of space inside the rocket, so that's not an issue- thank's for the suggestion of 3-5Xs. I think i heard that somewhere but it totally slipped my mind.

Yeah, I'd probably go 20-24 feet on a rocket this size.

If you listen to qquake you'll be building rockets like this soon:

oh no , he gone start his 4,002,121th build

Hi Nate, I may have replied to this @ our meeting but, the "Badazz rocket", ZZTARFIRE, is the one u want to get. The manufacturers philosophy:"I'd rather c u flying instead of building. What's nice is it has the altimeter bay for "down the road duel deployment" AND comes with mounts for both 29 and 38mm!! I'll try and remember to bring it Sat cause I have an H on order from Jose'. Then u caN GET A CLOSER look. (Made from stock pvc). The owner stands behind what he sells too. Took less than an hour, - painting. Still working on that. The fins r actually slotted inside. (pic b 4 I inserted cable ties through fin slots and epoxied. At $100, well worth it!! C me Sat, OK? :wink:TTY Glenn

What ever you do , just like it . Be it scratch built or a kit there the same . And as cti vs AT get what you want . Where I'm at it mostly EX stuff with both in for fun . Happy building and read a lot
