I was fortunate to find one of these magnificent kits still wrapped in it’s original plastic from a production run in 1994 recently. Started the Estes Rockets Masters series Mercury Atlas from 1994 today! As instructed I went ahead several steps and dry fit parts well before gluing. The kit was short the orange tube spacer, but everything else was there. As I was marking out the main engine tube I followed the instructions. Then when I went to fit the engine hook I realized it was way too short for the measurements given. Upon going way ahead in the directions this kit is set up for either D or E engines or at least the instructions were. I thought to myself the Big Daddy was the same engine configuration. The engine hook supplied in this kit was the D (short) version and NOT the longer E version. Fortunately the last rocket build I did had not used the E (longer) hook so I was able to re-measure and use it. The instructions in this particular kit were WRONG for the E engine mount. Had I followed them without dry fitting and wanting the E capability these instructions would have glued in the engine block way too short and ONLY allowed a D installation. BIg mistake on Estes’ part. They had the updated directions, but used the old D parts. Fortunately I caught this before any glue became involved. All is going well now and the entire engine mount is correct and modified to handle D or E engines. 🥰🚀🚀🚀6AFA69A1-39E0-4618-BB49-E6B54E2D437D.jpeg

Made some good progress on the Estes Mercury Atlas today. All slow and time consuming work, but fun to do! I used plastic safe thin CA for the wraps and fairings instead of contact cement ala Apogee Saturn V build instructions I used for my Saturn V build. Had some gaps to fill between the thicker plastic fairings and the really thin wrap material. Decided to hold my breath and use thick CA and some kicker hoping I wouldn’t melt anything. It worked great and got the bottom plastic wrap installed as well as the side engine fairings! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

Got a couple more steps crossed off the Estes Mercury Atlas build today. Cutting out those two very thin and delicate plastic strips, sanding them down and getting them CA’d down was quite the endeavor! Also installed the modified shock cord base. I’m using 275lb Kevlar secured to the engine mount. 🥰🚀🚀🚀

This is really a nice kit. I have two of them. Estes really outdid themselves, when they designed and packaged this model.
Definitely a quality kit! Got the motor mount glued in late last night and the side covers cut out. Just waiting for the fillet glue to dry on the top CR and then I flip it over and secure the bottom fillet. It’s been a fun kit to build! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

So I guess you could say I made some major progress on the Master’s Series Estes Mercury Atlas today! 😎🙌🥰🚀🚀🚀

CB26697B-6681-4931-B6BD-625E9AF42554.jpegThe Estes Master’s Series Mercury Atlas Rocket Friendship 7, John Glenn’s historic ride, was finished up building today. I started off reinforcing the launch lugs with Fixit Epoxy Clay. Then I moved onto the flight fins. After that I started probably the most difficult part of the project which is the capsule and escape rocket tower. I’ll wait to glue this to the capsule until after both have been finish painted. Then the combo will get glued to the transition nosecone. The lox line didn’t match up exactly with the counterpart on the plastic transition/nosecone piece so I had to delaminate the lox line about half way and move over to match the nosecone location. With the exception of a small piece of lox line to meet the plastic portion exactly the building process is complete! Now it’s on to some fill work, primer, paint, Mylar and decals. I really like this rocket and can’t wait to display this at Cal Poly Humboldt with my other NASA rockets in the fall! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

Awright, how come we don't have a "Green Monster of Envy" smiley to react to postings like this? What's worse, it appears to be that same miserable Centuri Mercury capsule as used on my Redstone, so they'd be the same scale, which makes me triply double jealous! Except fpr building that capsule/tower...!

Nice job thus far! How will you handle the shiny aluminum? Boy, you see all those different metal tones in that photo, if you went that route it would be a very challenging finish!

I note, too (you are likely aware) that capsule is not accurate for anything but MR3, Alan Shepherd's inaugural flight, and even there, well, good enough for flying certainly. I mention it because Boyce Aerospace makes an accurat capsule if you ask him - rectangular window, etc, and even includes 3 aerospikes. At 5 oz. its too heavy to fly on my Redstone, but for displaying you may want it.

Yep I’m aware on the capsule and it is the same scale as the Redstone. This one went together a bit better than the Redstone’s as I incorporated what I learned in building that one. Yes they are both difficult to assemble. Overall it’s been a great build so far! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

Oh on the aluminum finish the kit came with the pre-cut Mylar strips to replicate that. 🥰🚀🚀🚀

Thank goodness! I like to build, but that capsule/tower is enough trouble for one build! Beautiful details on this one, the expansion joints in the piping and everything! They need to re-release it, you won't scratch-build stuff like that!

Well the Mercury Atlas project moved further forward today! Second coat of primer added to the BT then sanded. A few spots needed a third hit so I got that done and it is now drying again. Painted the capsule and skirt gloss black, the tower red, the LOX line silver and the flight fins flat black. That was a lot of work for one day. Should be able to shoot the BT silver tomorrow if I get a wild hair second wind tonight and sand the BT spots again or if I get up early enough to do it tomorrow. Today was an incredibly warm paint day. I really wish I had painted the three nozzles before installing them. I just followed the directions, but should have known better. 🥰🚀🚀🚀
