My Apogee Components, Inc Perigrine JR model rocket lovingly kit bashed into the DEVO WHIP IT! is now complete sans recovery system connection and spin testing. Without engine or parachute, weight comes in at 9.91 oz and stands 31” tall. With all the modifications entered into Open Rocket she shows a stable flight on an Aerotech Enerjet E30-4T with a stability of 1.14 without any additional nose weight. We’ll see how the spin testing goes to make a decision about the nose weight. You might recognize the Whip It! font from another 80’s Whip Master, Indiana Jones and Raider’s of the Lost Ark. The fins of this rocket have vinyl silhouettes of Indy as well in this homage to the two 80’s cultural phenomena. As with all my projects my beautiful bride Lorrena made all the vinyl graphics. Here’s a complete list of components for this really fun project: The base kit is the Apogee Components Perigrine JR. The energy dome nosecone and lower small energy domes were custom 3D printed items from GoopTroop on Etsy. The Bison Skulls were also 3D printed by ScaleGrail also on Etsy. The DEVO figure was from Super7.com. I also ordered the clear BT70 tube and BT70 Coupler from Apogee. The internal ceiling/floor bulkheads were made by me out of 2 layers of 1/8” balsa sheet. For the stage I added a 1/4” balsa riser. The stage lights are dollar store push pins and the DEVO name on the stage we’re just beads from a bead kit. I custom constructed the Boattail after replacing the engine mount with a longer piece of BT50 tube. I added another engine mount centering ring (made from Matt board for photos from Amazon) at the base to add more support for the rearward engine and the Boattail. I did not use the standard metal engine hook and instead bought an Estes 24mm screw on engine retainer also from Apogee. The nosecone to tube interface was a custom made double coupler made from the piece of BT70 tube not used from the kit. I replaced the shock cord from the kit for an engine mounted 250lb Kevlar shock cord. The Kevlar is by Emma Kites off Amazon. I’m using an automotive sandable primer and RustOleum stops rust gloss enamel colors. All graphics are being made from permanent vinyl cut on a Cricut cutter. The clear tube is a slightly different internal measurement from the BT so the couplers on both ends required quite a bit of modification to work. That about covers it. I think I whipped this project pretty good! 😎🚀🚀🚀 #WhipIt #WhipItGood #DEVO #WeAreDevo #WhipMaster #markmothersbaugh #WhenaPoblemComesAlong #IndianaJones #geraldcasale #80sICONS #ApogeeComponents

WOW!! I was thinking about doing something like this, except the rocket would have looked like a DEVO band-member, with the red top, yellow jumpsuit and white boots as the fins. Except I couldn't figure out how to make it stable, because I kept making the top with ever-decreasing-radius tube sections, which acted as fins in the wrong spot, making the rocket fly backwards.
3D printing saves the day, I guess. Gotta get me one of those things. Go DEVO!

Thanks! That would be an awesome version for sure! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

Thank you! 🥰🚀🚀🚀
I've been meaning to post on Facebook but was so busy to get ready for that SPAAR meet last Saturday I kind of stayed off FB until I got that stuff done. I launched my Olympus twice and it now hangs about 89 miles away on the edge of tree branch, thst I tried desperately for 2 hours or so with a tee shirt gun modified to shoot a grappling tennis ball....lmao....I was exhausted before Saturday and that day just wore me out. I was so physically bad I couldn't drive home someone else had too. But im still going glad to see they are coming along! I keep forgetting your over here too...lol. Nice man!!!

Ah man I’m sorry about that! Maybe someone can recover it and you can get it back.

Yeah the farmer knows about it. They had a tennis ball gun thing that I almsot got it free a few times. But it was just a wierd day. Some guy launched his Aerotech G-Force and it never ejected. Nosecone was in the top centering ring. Someone's dog ran off after a rocket hit it. Luckily they found it Sunday. I'm going this weekend to my old launch spot over in Bloomsburg and try to get some up. I hope, I just want to fly these without worring about trees or power lines, or the wind might take it to the next county, lol. Thats part of it though but when I see some others and where they launch......I'd be in heaven out west.

Out west…really west here in Nor Cal I can’t launch squat due to wildfire concerns so we just sit here and build more rockets LOL! 🥰🚀🚀🚀

I shouldn't complain, it could be worse. I took a 10 year break, that was not wanted. So getting back into this has been honestly life changing, its hard to explain exactly but I still have some mobility issues. But I love building as much as flying, always have. One day soon the stars will align for me, and a nosecone will be aimed at them.
