On a thread about getting rockets out of trees kuririn post a YouTube video about a guy who makes a tubular slingshot that shoots a bolt that is attached to a fishing reel. Shoot the bolt over the branch, tie a rope to it, reel the rope over the branch, and work the rocket off the branch.

I built one using some old wood arrows I've had laying around for years, an aluminum tube, and an old fishing reel. I discovered that the 3/8" surgical tubing I used would slip off the bolt and my bolts were going all over the place.

Yesterday I bought some arrow nocks at a local sports shop, taperd my 3 bolts, and glued them on with JB Weld. I cut the surgical tubing in two in the middle at the rear and added a Kevlar string to go into the bolt nock. Today I tested it and have much more accurate results. Friday a friend of mine & I are going to try to retrieve a couple of rockets out of pine trees that we launched a couple of weekends ago. :)
Far out, every club should have one!

Well today was a short day on rocket work... I put a 2nd coat on the Estes SR-71 & sanded the first primer coat on the Estes SeaHawk to get it closer to the painting stage... Had to run out to the hardware store to get PVC glue for the rocket stand tomorrow...:confused::confused::confused:

Ordered a chuck for my wood lathe to make it easier to build concentric rocket bits....

John, the more I looked at this chuck system & videos about it the more I wanted one. I used to do a lot of wood turning back in the day but I haven't touched my Rockwell wood lathe in years. I ordered up the Nova G3 Bundle yesterday & it should be here on Tuesday. Between now & Tuesday I'll clean up my lathe & bench & get it ready for the Nova. I haven't decided yet if you are a good influence.

Finished cleaning the avbays and downloading the altimeters on all the rockets we flew last weekend at Holtville Havoc. Then cleaned all the motor casings:

Just waiting for Sharon to add up her Newtons so I can post up our totals. She is up in the office digging herself out from all the work that came in while we were having fun at the launch.
Great bunch of folks with Tripoli San Diego, if you haven't flown with them, you are missing out!

So how far will thing go into the Bong Swamp?
Hey - I already lost a Tomahawk to the Bong Swamp. The key is resisting Go Fever and waiting for favorable wind directions.

Or maybe flying high enough to go over the swamp entirely.

Since I fly multistagers for effect, I've found I have a different challenge. Keeping events lower altitude is hard both from motor selection, but also on the electronics side. It pushes the -lower- envelope of the various safety limits. (Eggtimer Quantums and Protons) That's tripped me up a couple of times. CATO's don't help either.

My elder boy looked at the mocked up Tater (Talos Terrier Recruit) and asked 'You're flying that as a boosted dart the first time, right?'

I just thought of adding this to the forum:
I made a trip through Washington State, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and finally Kansas, and stopped at a few interesting places in each state. In New Mexico, I stopped at the White Sands Missle Test Range, and toured the museum and grounds to see the history of our country's progression and advancements in rocketry. Very interesting to see what transpired between Dr.Robert Goddard's work, to WW II, and the weather related rockets, and the Patriot Missle System.
A full-scale Pershing Missle and V-2 really put some of our rockets into perspective! There is even a full-size Mercury (Redstone) prior to it becoming a manned vehicle ! Each display has a description of it's place and use, in our development of rockets, missles, and space exploration. Very cool, in my book!

Today, I received my membership folder and card from Triploi. Later when we head out, I plan on getting some MDF and making a fin alignment jig.

Gathering up some rockets for a launch on Sunday. I'll look at the forecast and try to come up with some motor choices and put a few together tomorrow. The 24, 29, and 54 can use CTI, no need to build ahead. I only have AT for 38. H178DM for the Darkstar JR Sims at 2278'. I also have a couple of 29mm single use motors that may do the trick.

Finished the rocket rack.. Made it to hold 5 rockets.. Each section can hold a 4 inch and the top can hold up to a 7 inch.. Shopped a local hardware store so it ran $43 to make, but worth it!
