The closest club to ScrapDaddy that launches high power is CRMRC in Vermont. Their launch site is about 120 miles from him (almost directly north). The closest rocket club of any type to him is ASTRE. Their launch field (which can handle only LPR and MPR launches) is about 60 miles from him. (I live about 120 miles north and slightly east of it, but I have a car.)
I also live about 120 road miles from CRMRC's launch site as well, but in a different direction (west and slightly south). ScrapDaddy lives about 95 miles away from me, in yet a third direction (south and slightly east).
ScrapDaddy and I live in an area of NY State that measures roughly 180 miles by 170 miles. Within that region there are 3 known hobby rocket enthusiasts. (Me, him and one other guy.) Rocketeer #3 lives 30 miles from me (to the east); I have never met or even talked to him. ScrapDaddy lives about 90 miles south of him. None of the three of us have ever met. I only know ScrapDaddy from this forum. Of the three, I am the only NAR member. Rocketeer #3 may or may not be a member of TRA; I'm not sure.
In the approximately 22,000 square mile region (I'm not counting the section that is in Lake Ontario), the three of us comprise the entire known hobby rocketry community. Our region is both the largest and the least populated part of the state. It is actually one of the least populated regions in the eastern US. The hobby of sport rocketry is clearly not too popular around here; me and ScrapDaddy are trying to fly upwind against the soccer/hockey jet stream that so completely dominates the area. While participation in a club is possible, there are some logistical difficulties involved.
