I just saw a news story about a USAF F-16 Vipers air demo team. I thought we already had an F-16 air demo team called the Thunderbirds. So who the heck are the Vipers? Does any of our USAF forum members have more info? Do we have TWO air demo teams in the Air Force? Did a search on the net but not much background/history for the Vipers, only a schedule. Thanks.

There a demo team also but not the Thunderbirds. They were at the Cleveland air show last year, (the Blue Angels also performed). They put the F-16 thru its paces but not the formation stuff the Thunderbirds do.

The name is a confusing story, the team started calling them Vipers because it sounded sexier they feel. Its still and F16 Fighting Falcon. A new upgraded version of the F16 may be coming out and it may be called the F21 Viper.

I know of the Viper West demo, it's a single F-16 that flies at airshows demonstrating the aircraft.

There have traditionally been single bird demo teams for the F-15, A-10, and F-16. These guys kind of fill a void that the Tbirds won't have the opportunity to given their international schedule. Vipers are rolling to a lot of stateside events, hope you get to check them out. https://www.facebook.com/ViperDemoTeam/
