What did you do rocket wise today?

Reading histories of early sounding rockets. WAC Corporal, Aerobee, Tomahawk, etc. Learning stuff I didn't know.

Could imagine getting sucked into a scale phase. The big, complex stuff, like Saturn and the shuttle, has never really appealed to me. But the simplicity of the 3FNC/4FNC sounding rockets is really appealing, as it's inline with what I want to build and fly. And the small size of the originals makes small-ratio models of them reasonable, enabling OCD levels of detail.

So far?
Dipped a few more ignitors. Magnalite. And a tiny little bit ProCast on some dry ones. And one e-match in ProCast. Testing to follow. Does it burn or pop?

Tried everything but stand on my head. Whatever I did wrong, I can not get the Conductive mix to work. Every type of wire. Every spacing. Thick, Thin, in between, nada. So I tried to order conductive primer from Firefox. Got back a message saying I had to send an orderform and ID. So I scanned that and sent it via email... nada. Guess I have to call on Monday.

Flew some rockets, 3 I think and my Ecee glider.
It was fun, briefly talked to Sandy, and happy birthday to you (I think). It was fun and I plan on going back tomorrow.

And my car got hit twice… but nothing that noticeable.

Yep, we were winding down when we met, but hopefully next launch we can hang out more. It is both my and my wife's birthday - one year apart. Sorry I missed the Ecee. Gliders are fun, but I'm not good at it, so I like watching other people fly them!

Hope tomorrow is another good day of flying!

Sandy.

Sandy:
I did not see your name listed in birthdays so you must be wanting to keep that a secret. I hope you had a great day at the launch.

Mulled over how to make this wider section of the Falstaff airframe where the fins are placed.

Falstaff screen.jpg

Given the small scale I'm working in and the fact that that section is BT-20 on this version I have a few ideas. 🤔
Current one is to slice up some BT-20 to fit between the fins, place a split ring of tubing above the fins and then fillet it down to the main airframe.

Then there's just the tapered fins...

Oh, and the motor nozzle.

And the spin motors.

Need to do less mulling and more building. Perhaps tomorrow.

Just UHU, but not the colour changing ‘goes on purple, dries clear’ type.

The other thing that helps is go up a weight in paper. Office paper is 80 GSM, going to 120 GSM is easier to work with.

Lastly, press under some real weight -like 2 kilos of books (8 pounds) for a full 24 hours. Protect your books and desk with something like baking paper.
Thanks for the info. This will help.

Went to a CATO launch in CT yesterday. Flew my Estes Maniac on a D12-5 for a spectacular flight. Then I flew my Interstellar, which was built for me and given to me for Christmas by Joshua Drummond. It was recovered my a 32" semi elliptical chute made by Joshua as well. It was a great flight and recovery on an Aerotech F42-4. The very top of the chute was touching where the grass meets the road when it landed.

Flew some more rockets
5 or 6 I think. It was a small launch just Doc, Roy and I. And it got windy and too cloudy at like 12:30. But it was fun, and I came back with some old beat up nose cones. Both of which are 3:1 3”.

Sanded the white Rustoleum paint with 320 and applied some filler to the spots that screwed up when the paper stuck. going to paint it again and get it right before putting the Stickershock vinyl on.

Well the battery was dead on the old 1964 cub cadet garden tractor that i use out back to launch rockets. I carry my launch pad in the trailer, an use the battery on the tractor to launch. Then if its futher than i wish to walk i can ride across the field to get the rocket. Seems the generator has quit, so i ordered another one. No rockets launched today.

Received a 4S1P 3.3amh LiPo. 60C with 120C burst. Heck 30C would be 90amps (for a second or three).
Hoping that will light a 3 to 5 motor cluster on a relay box with normal Magnalite dipped Firestar leads.

Talk to @Charles_McG. He's been doing something for a long time that I've daydreamed about, which is making semi-scale models of lots of sounding rockets in a common scale (more or less). With a variety of interstages, he can mix and match boosters and sustainers.
