Has anyone ever tried this? Saw it last night at hobby lobby almost pulled the trigger but practiced some much needed restraint with my rocketry purchases. IMG_1628.jpg

All color shifting paints are a bit of a pain, make sure you follow the directions carefully and use the recommended base coats and clear coats.

I tried it on a rocket I put together out of spare parts. Regular primer, the black base coat, then two light coats of the purple fog. Maybe I got lucky on the first time though but it looks pretty good. Sorry, no picture available.

I just finished a rocket using rustoleum color shirt galaxy green. It came out well. Just tested the GPS tracker and was still getting a signal through woods at 750 feet away, and was still getting signal when I called it ‘good enough’.

Other than using a black base coat, I saw no difference from other paints.

I’ve used the rustoleum one - it’s great... just need to watch out for applying too heavily - it goes on like a clear coat so it’s easy to accidentally over do it and get runs.

I used it on my L2 rocket, and everything worked as advertised.
I liked the end results, but it was probably a one-off/BTDT experiment for me, as additional painting steps take significantly more time than usual. And I don't enjoy painting all that much.

Two unadvertised side-effects of color shifting paints are:
1). The overall paint looks darker and less shiny in anything but direct sunlight. You really need direct sunlight to appreciate the color shifting paint. Otherwise, it's a waste.
2). It's a PITA to maintain. Every time you pickup a scratch to the FG/plastic after a landing, you need to go to the begging: mask-off parts; re-spray black base coat; re-spray primary color; re-spray color shifting coat. For some of the paints you need to wait 48+ hours between coats.

In my case, BTDT, moved on.

YMMV,

What is the color shift paint that has been used by forgers? Is Galaxy Green making the statement that you are burning money?
