Hope y'all don't get blown away..Seems there is a wind advisory in effect until 3am tonight..Wind gusts of up to 50mph:eek: Looking forward to seeing flight reports! :)

Must be a big wind storm. I'm about 8-10 hours north of LDRS and it's been blowing like a son of a gun for the past several days. The big danger up here is grass and brush fires what with the humidity down around 10 percent following an exceptionally wet winter. No more grassland rocket launches up here until at least October or even November.

I spent a few hours at LDRS-29 Saturday.

People were making up for not being able to fly earlier during the event as many, many rockets were launched.

The San Diego group flew their upscale Interceptor.

The UP part was good.

The DOWN part was not so good. :(

It can be rebuilt.

Couple of photos from my perspective....

Sorry for the ones that couldn't make it and hello to the ones still here!

This was the Wildman Cesaroni N10,000 Drag Race. There were 7 rockets all on the same engines. All but one worked perfectly. The rocket is a 6" X 12' rocket, weight 65lbs. It went 10,557ft and pulled 65g and definitely hit mach

Photo #1 Me with Discovery Channel people pre interview before drag race.

Photo#2 The view of all of the rockets (2 are lying down)

Photo #3 Name of my rocket. SPAM = Speedy Projectile Attempting Mach

enjoy!

That was a great race.
All but one worked perfectly.
AFAIK they all worked perfectly. However the 7th was an M2050 Skidmark. CJ had to be different (actually there were only 6 N10,000's available). Or are you referring to the deployment failure of one of them?

Well, I flew my rocket on an M4770 today, and it was successful. The main didn't fully unfurl, but there was no damage, and the boost was phenomenal. The flame was enormous - significantly longer than the rocket. I'll post pics in a bit. Also, Porthos was spectacular on a full load of Redlines, as was the Wildman upscale Darkstar on a skidmark O and 3 Vmax Ks. A number of other great flights went up as well today, but I can't remember all of them. It was definitely the best day of the event so far.

Sounds pretty cool man. Those Vmax motors are something else, aren't they?

:pop: Anxiously awaiting pics. :pop:

Definitely. I don't have the other pics tweaked or located yet, and I won't bother tonight because it's late and I want to be out at the site tomorrow, but here's a liftoff shot of the M4770:

Best Vmax pic ever!

I'm definitely making the trip out there for that one. I've only got 15 months to plan/save/build. I'll come up with something cool. :dark:

I agree brother! I might me moved by then which would make me only like 7 hours from Argonia!

Where are you moving to?

-Kevin

Around the dunlap Iowa area. Got alot of family out that way. I was born in Omaha Nebraska and always loved it out there. I hope to move back after I graduate next year. Class of 2011, LETS GO!

Ben

P.S. My dad worked with Bruce Lee on of your former launch members and said he actually came to a launch with him in the early 90's (92-95) somewhere in NE.

Sounds like I'll be seeing you at some of the local launches around here (at least Midwest Power). We may need to drag race sometime.

Great shots! I'm surprised no one has typed up a recap of what's happened so far. I guess I'll post my rendition of it (since I already have it for a couple of friends who couldn't make it). Will be posting photos also later. Enjoy! :)

Friday: The 1st day we were there was still really windy with a few brave fliers. From we were told, no flying was done on Thursday (1st day of LDRS) due to 50+ mph wind gusts (we felt it driving into CA that night). We just wandered around looking at people's projects that were laid out. We decided not to go back for the night launch, since the RSO had mentioned that the odds of it opening back up were slim (heard later that only a couple of small ones went off).

Saturday: Most of the fun & large projects went on this day. The 29 Mass Squat launch at 7AM, pretty nuts but cool to watch. Too bad not everyone went with skids, that would have been fun. There was a drag race between 7 N10000 Skidmarks which proved to be quite the sight (had been postponed from Friday). We saw Kari Byron from Mythbusters show from the Discovery Channel throughout the weekend. There was another mass launch that ended up with several rockets CATO-ing right above Kari while she was filming. She didn't seem phased at all.

AZ Patriot team had a great performance with their Patriot battery. Interceptor team had a great up and suffered reparable damage on the way down. Delta 2 team had an unfortunate accident due to a chained reaction where the 2nd stage blew up while in prep mode. 2 people were hurt, causing the range to be shutdown and had to be air evac'd. Last I heard, they were ok and were due to be released today. I hope the Discovery Channel doesn't paint the hobby in a bad light...Heard they were planning on airing video clips the week of July 4th). Range was later re-opened, but spirits were dampened. Night launches were somewhat conservative, but still cool. I think some people were at the banquet. I also don't blame people for not wanting to navigate through the trenches in the middle of the night looking for their rockets. :eyepop:

Sunday: Much of the weekend crowd dwindled when we were prepping to leave. Galactica flew in the morning. Jack (Whats up hobbies) had a N10000 Drag race with another person with a Patriot. We caught the main event for Sunday, Wildman project on an O Skidmark before having to leave to return to reality on Monday.

Overall, it was great experience as our 1st LDRS to see the large/crazy projects and meeting people. Definitely not complaining about the weather that was out there (aside from the windy conditions). :)

Can't wait to see what happened today for the experimental projects!

Kari Byron was there....?
That was worth the price of admission alone.....

Not to draw too much attention but are there any details? when you say blow up that can be a number of things.

I don't want to spread any facts/details that might be misleading, so I'll just let the people who were involved in the project jump in to provide them if they want to.

It didn't "blow up". The staging circuitry was somehow triggered while the rocket was horizontal, and the separation charge fired, as well as the upper stage motor being lit.

Both individuals received burns; reports I've heard (from a fairly reliable source) are that one has first degree, and the second has first and second degree burns.

Until more information is available, speculation on what happened, and how, is counter-productive.

Dunlap is a little over an hour north-east of here. I've been there many times -- there's a place just west of town that's fantastic for buying wood for woodworking.

Yep, I knew that.

Thanks for the additional details. I was just providing my account of what I observed from behind the flag line.
