So, I'm sure we have some members in Virginia; what's the rocketry scene like there, especially WRT strange laws and rules?

I'm currently in southern California, but I'll be moving to Roanoke around the middle of the year.

And, stay warm, everybody!

Thanks

Coastal state to coastal state.... extreme leap of faith here. New job bringing you eastward? My sister lives in VA and works in DC, so I have considered a move to Virginia as well. I have looked at local clubs and fields just in case something were to happen and a move become eminent.

I'm in Virginia Beach, and a BAR from last summer. No funky rules that I've encountered. I'm lucky enough to have some GREAT high power capable fields/clubs within 3ish hours drive.

I launch with:

SEVRA https://www.sevra.org/

Tripoli Central Virginia (Battle Park) https://www.battlepark.org/

Tripoli East North Carolina https://ncrockets.org/about/

Don't forget about MDRA https://www.mdrocketry.org/

The club locater listed above by WillMarchant should help you find a home. Lots of opportunity! Good luck with the move.

My employer (of almost eight years) is located in Roanoke; I'm finally taking the leap and moving us over there. It's scary, but, ultimately, I think it's going to be a good move.

You will love Virginia, I was stationed at Ft.Belvoir during the early 90's and loved the area.

Hello,

I am in Lynchburg 45-60min from Roanoke. There are several clubs to fly with in the area. Unfortunately for me I have not been able to find time to fly lately but hopefully soon. The closest to you would probably be nrvr.org, But there are couple others within a few hours, hovar.org , battlepark.org, and some more if you dont mind to drive a bit further.

I'm in Fredericksburg. I fly at MDRA which is on the Eastern Shore an also sometimes at Battlepark which is near Culpepper. Both have very good fields for high power rocketry but Battlepark doesn't have any launches during the crop growing season. MDRA uses a very big farm during the winter and a smaller sod farm during the summer.

Visited my friend in Chesterfield last fall and was able to launch in a hayfield that had been recently cut. Very nice ground to land on - the bottom of the bent stalks remained and made for a nice springy landing area. My friend has launched throughout the area for years and has never had an issue. Also, if you're ever in the area the HobbyTown off of the Midlothian Turnpike west of Richmond has an excellent rocketry section.
