Chris,
I was kind of hoping you would say that.

That makes 9.
we can have up to 16 (I think that is what Bob said).
6 to 7 more would be awesome.

Pencil me in..First will have to get a DS Mini..And then save up the duckets to attend:rolleyes:

Hopefully, knocking on wood and doing a little dance will get me there?

Excellent. If we're short on attendees, I might even enter twice (I have both a DS mini and a Wild Child)

another fella from Thor

Whodat?

Troj(whether he wants to or not)

When does my kit arrive? :p

Tim Lehr has agreed
Crazy Jim Hendrickson has agreed
Daryl Hankes(Tim assures me he will)

Yeah....getting any one of those three to agree to a drag race is about as difficult as getting an alcoholic to agree to take a drink.... They're drag race junkies!

-Kevin

Clay,
You can always drag race your mini with the rest of us. Bob agreed to a mini darkstar/ mini wildman drag race on saturdays using CTI g106 skids. currently those who have agreed to race are
Me (of course)
another fella from Thor
Troj(whether he wants to or not)
my oldest son
Tim Lehr has agreed
Crazy Jim Hendrickson has agreed
Daryl Hankes(Tim assures me he will)
And another of Tims friends

That makes 8 and Bob said we can fill the 60 and 70 pads.
If we get more than will fit on the pads we may have to do more than one heat.

If you want to race bring your mini.

JOhn

G's at the 60 and 70.. are fairly ... quiet..
what if we changed from the sparkys where we didnt have to go out to the dirt.
OF course i remember talk of making all drag races 60 and 70 pads due to proximity of the flight line, and hard to react to a bad rocket(s) comming in at the flight line.

I plan to build a mini this summer, havent bought a kit yet, But, Count me in.

If that is what it takes, then I will have a kit for you in April.
The other is John B.

4 to 5 more needed.

Yep. Drag races are better a bit further out -- safer that way!

Cool.

Ping Greg and Rick and see if they wanna party.

BTW, I won't be there in April -- I'll be at SLI, down in Huntsville.

I don't have a way of running ballistic splash pattern sims - But just looking at the capable altitude.. 60 and 70 pads with a G puts flight line right around the sweetpot of where they would come in.
I feel safest 100 feet away from g motors...

It's not a safe recovery that's the issue; it's the errant rocket that comes off the rod/rail squirrely.

With a drag race, it's easy to be so focused on one rocket that you miss the one that's coming towards you. By moving things out, it's easier for spotters to get the word to the LCO, who can make a heads up announcement.

Clay,

Apparently your expertise in safety exceeds both Tripoli's national board of directors and their guidance given in their safety codes as well as the collective wisdom of the Kloudbusters (the host of LDRS 30) board of directors with their combined experience.

I'll have to rethink our position on allowing this to occur at LDRS 30. I sure wouldn't want to put anyone at risk after Clay told me it's not safe!

I never claimed expertise, I definately don't compare my knowlege to the collective. If my point of view, askew of expert opinions of KLOUDBusters or TRA, was offensive or insulting I apologize.

However, I will never appologize for saying what I think - if I feel like A. there is fair amount of reason why I said it. B. It keeps that guy at my ankles safer.

TROJ: i would rather jump over a squirly unstable rocket, than get hit by one 400mph PLUS

Clay, you're missing the point...

In a drag race, there may not be time to notify the LCO, who can notify the public, to watch out for that rocket coming in towards the crowd.

Moving the rockets out further gives the spotters, and LCO, more time to react and get people moving.

Trust me; I've had the misadventure of a G motor going squirrelly off of the G pads at a large launch, and have seen first-hand what the time required to get people moving out of the way is. There's a trailer with a dent that matches my son's rocket to prove it.

Clay,

As you well know, I know you personally! I signed your L1 and L2 certifications!

Here's a free piece of advice.

In person you are a great guy! Online, you don't come off so well. If I didn't know any better (which would be like most people who post here), I would rather go to a launch with JI and listen to his old rehashed ramblings rather than listen to your crap!

You need to go find some other way to kill time at work. Play Farmville! Surf porn sites! Anything but continuing to post your nonsense on the forums. Keep it up and no one will talk to you at a launch!

Bob

While I agree that a G motor that far away seems excessive, I think that in this case it would actually look better. Up close, you'll really only be able to focus on a few of the rockets. Further out, you can see the whole thing. It'll look especially nice in pictures. :)

I do however, agree that with 15-20 rockets, distance is a good thing for safety. The drag races at the last LDRS seemed a bit too close for comfort.

I'll have to order a Wildchild or Darkstar mini, but if I have one by LDRS, I'm in!

I totally didn't expell that or remove it from my thought. In fact agree with what your saying. Safety distance is good. Most instances of G motors doing that dont make a 500 foot radius.(from my non-expert witnessing) If it breaks apart puts them even less. All, I did was point out the aspect of moving them to (1200??) places them more likely to recover bad with exponential energy.

With safety its very much so pick your poison. That thing meant to save you can take you down.

We all know how ineffective an LCO is a moving rocketeers...

As, Bob points out, All this has done is step on toes.

Nick,

The decision to move them to the away pads were based on two parts. One, I feel a large number drag race should have a bit more safety distance. But the real reason was the fact that the organizers want to fly sparky motors. The away pads will be set up in a bare, dirt field. The closer pads are set on prairie grass. All sparkys, regardless of impulse, will fly from the pads set on dirt at LDRS 30. It's a fire prevention issue!

Ah, even better! I've always been a big proponent of flying sparky's on dirt. I like not having to worry about starting a fire. I'd rather just focus on the flight. :)

Bob,
While your here..... you need to be in on the drag race. Should I pencil you in?
We have 4 to 5 spots.

What launch will you be at???? I will just get it from Daryl when he is there.

Do you think Rick and Greg would go for it?

No thanks! I suspect I'll be a bit busy. If I were to join, I'd want to fly these on a research day and put in a full G!

Bob
Some G's are fuller than others!

that sounds like a good matchup, my son will race you with his 54mm darkstar dd.
what case and nozzle is that? the smallest loki i have is 38/740

My son, last time he challenged a drag racer (hes 5) the guy said yes... he look at him in a normal as can be voice said.. "you better ask somebody..." "maybe you should ask your mom.."
I lost it... my 5 yearold is way awesome at pad trash talk..

It's the loki 38-480. We can probably do 740 J's, I think my buddy that has that case will be down there too. You're referring to the 54mm diameter one, not the 4 inch one with a 54mm mount correct?

I'd hesitant to fly it on a J unless it's at black rock, because it'll certainly go!

Yes, the Sttandard Darkstar.. I was planning to get the 480 case soon, so whichever.

My XPRS is currently set up under DIY days, I am working on cramming a 42"ish N (loki N3800) into a 60" rocket, minimum 4" diameter. And a J1000 for the standard darkstar.
Maybe lugg out the wifes extreme on an M3000.

Hmm, When are you leaving? We were planning on Friday-Sunday, but I might be able to convince my dad missing thursday and friday from school isn't so bad.

That's a good question, since last years schedule would have it immediately follow LDRSxxx and be sandwiched between balls. I hope its mid week of september. I actually won't know untill its closer and AeroPac finializes the dates.
Things are looking good though...

They usually have it the weekend before BALLS, last time it was a two days after my birthday. My mom said she doesn't understand why us guys don't get a sweet 16, and they spent a ton on my sisters, so she gave us the okay for either BALLS or XPRS, I think I'd rather go to XPRS, because I'm building a modified Aerotech mustang with 33 LEDs in it. However, if Wedge Oldham has the full scale redstone ready to go, I'd rather hit BALLS, in which case, I guess we couldn't fly loki J's. Actually, if you are getting a 38-480, I've been looking at making a long burn smokey motor for that case ( with supervision from our local L3 research guys of course) One of them is a surgeon, so he was able to afford a 1200 square foot warehouse for EX motors with any chemical or tool you could think of, and he gladly shares with everyone else. He even supplies gloves, respirators, the whole nine, he's also got like 4 of every hawk mountain tube that he'll sell you pretty cheap.

Just pull the loki stickers off--- Make up a burnsim, give the propellant a name, and say it is EX...
I dont think theres a minimum impulse on ex at balls.
(but, if your not 18 I dont think they will let you fly.)
Rocketry is a family activity for me. So, i dont think i will go untill my son is big enough to make his first P motor. 12??

I am going to steer clear of blowing up my own motors for a few years. A. i need a shop with a lathe / mill.(altough there is one available i dont like to borrow) B. rocketry for me is family activity, and my son is too young, maybe when he gets a little older and can "calm" down a little.

But, my wife seems happier to think of me flying out to balls for a weekend over me driving the country with my son for 2 weeks.... So well see...

Hey Bob,

I can make sure I bring down a couple of our special G570 motors for the drag race. You know us Chicago crew, wink wink, nod nod.

Byron and I are planning on attending again this year and of course Tim will probably tag along. You gonna let me work at Pad Manager again this year?

Should be a great launch as usual...
