Facebook/Meta Screws Me Again...

Earlier today, I got a suspicious email saying that my FB account password had been attempted to be changed. But I was still able to access FB, and thought it was a phishing scam. Well... maybe it wasn't... Now I get this when I tried to use FB again...



I hate their bots.

I used to like Facebook, about 8-9 years ago. Over time, I’ve grown more and more alienated from it to the point where now I absolutely despise the Meta company, it’s leadership, the Facebook platform, and pretty much everything about it. The only reason I even keep an account is the number of Messenger group chats I’m in, and the real-life clubs (rocket clubs) that do so much of their communications through Facebook. If it weren’t for that, I’d be in favor of burning the whole thing down. Let it stay offline for a few days. Give everyone a mental health break.

My nephew has a virtual reality headset a META QUEST 3. He brought it over to the house and he and my son played it for hours on end.
I looked into it for a few moments just to see.
My boy asked if we could get one for him. I told him the cost was not an issue, it was the company. I would not pay one penny to the Meta company, it's leadership, the Fake book platform or anything about it.
I told him find one comparable other than Meta, I'll get it for you.
(yes, I too absolutely despise the company and everything about it, and I have never had an account. That doesn't seem to stop the weekly announcement that someone is trying to log into my account.)

I blame Facebook for a lot of social ills.

I am certain that their “engagement-based algorithms”, which took advantage of the human psychological tendency to engage with powerful emotions, like anger and hate, intentionally drove wedges between me and some of my valued real-world friends. They found they could profit off of making people angry with each other, because people will stick around to watch or participate if an argument or fight breaks out. So they found the more controversial things that friends would post or react to, and they pumped those interactions into the feeds of the people they knew it would piss off, just to make those people angry with each other and engage in a fight. I will never forgive the company for that.

That strategy seems to have gone by the wayside, and now my feed is just filled with sponsored or promoted garbage. I open the app to see what my groups are up too or what my cousins have posted, and my feed is full of crap like AI images of Scarlet Johansen with unrealistically big boobs in outfits I’m sure she’s never worn. Great. If I wanted to see that, I know how to search for it, and I don’t need it promoted to me when I’m there to connect with real people I know. What a piece of **** that platform has become. But unfortunately it has been around long enough, it’s the main conduit for certain kinds of communication, so you have to wade into the sewer now and then to check in with some people and groups. I hate it.

There are a lot of pretty girls and almost-porn. And a lot of Only Fans creators promoting their full-on porn channels. I don’t make judgments about that kind of stuff and am fine with people consuming it. I just don’t need it in my Facebook feed. It’s distracting and off-topic for what I want to use FB for.

One note on this, it’s not just youth. In fact, Facebook may have been more detrimental to adults. It seems like Facebook did to parents and grandparents what older generations said things like comics, rock & roll, TV, movies, and video games would do to kids. It rotted their brains. It seems like it was mostly older people who fell under the spell of misinformation, conspiracy theories, radical politics, and violent extremism spread on social media. It could be younger people have more skepticism and resistance to BS spread virally. Maybe because they grew up with it.

The main risk to youth seems to be cyberbullying and also feeling depressed because of comparing themselves unfavorably to supposed “peers” who promote themselves as living extraordinary lives. A lot of “influencers” publish an idealized fake version of their life as the real thing, and it can make the audience feel bad about their more ordinary or difficult existence.

Plenty of bad stuff for every generation!

They make it hard to do but google will give you instructions. I also have lots of friends who chat with messenger which is only reason I haven’t deleted account. They will prompt you if it’s temporary or not. They will do everything to keep you sucked into the vortex.
