The escape tower would be a good candidate for 3d printing also.

You can say that again!!

That thing made me crazy. But, when done, very rewarding.

Maybe Gary is listening..................

I've got the tower modeled, but printing anything that would be strong enough might be a problem. I intend to give it a try sometime soon.

Fin can is constructed. I still need to do the sand/primer/fill dance as soon as it gets warmer (who knows how long that will be?).

It slides on nicely to the main section so I can paint them separately.

This means I can more easily mask paint the black and white tank scheme and do the same for the lower unit.

I highly recommend Gary's 3D shroud set for this kit. It is solid and makes for many more construction options.

You can buy them here:

THX all!!

This build is getting to the point where I have to wait for better weather to sand/fill/paint.

I am working on the small parts so they will be ready to install once construction resumes.

Some TLP kits will now get some build time...

Cheers!!

I don't know anything about the 3D printing stuff, but from what I see I'd be VERY surprised if a printed tower wasn't very strong. The way the cross braces work adds strength to the structure so that one made of small pieces of wood that are glued together are surprisingly rigid and strong.

When you do print one please do a few tests on it and let us know what you think about it's strength. Back in college I had a strength of materials class and in the lab we had access to a machine that would measure stress and strain as it crushed or pulled things apart. Things like, steel bars, bracing, etc. It would deform an I beam to test it's strength. How cool would it be to test a wood and glue tower and a 3D printed tower and see how they compare??

This will be great...have an "improvement" kit available to buy upgraded parts....if they get more 1B kits to sell. I should have picked one up months ago but didn't....now I'm kicking myself for not having a quality 1B to build for the fleet.

I'm thinking about dropping the coin on another V....either the Apogee or Sheri's on an I.......Maybe another 2157 but modded to 29mm....

Oh well....rambling....just wanted to subscribe to this build....looking great man, really quality work on this one!

Fred, If you can find one of these kits, grab it!!

You will love building it and, the 3D shroud assembly makes for better build options, IMHO.

Cheers!!

I've been working on this winter project, and got one of the 3D printed tank shroud for the 1B.
Easy to clean up with sand paper. The fit is great. The price is right. This will help the build of the 1/70 Saturn 1B a lot.
I hope this kit becomes available again.
Here are a few pic.

Very nice!!

Did you paint all of that detail on the tanks??

If so....WOW!!

Cheers!

Thanks. Yes I did the tanks for SA-205, and SA-206 and other parts of the saturn 1B.
I'm trying to do as many body wraps as possible. I have them done, and started to check the size and fit.
I hope to do a build thread when I get them all sized up right and completed. I'm trying to do as little painting as possible but lots of detail.
If this works out I will make my PDF files available to those that would like them.

Thanks again.

I'm in!!!!!

All,

Take a look at post #42.

Saluki has some incredible wraps for the Semroc Saturn 1B.

I will be making them into waterslides and applying them after I paint (whenever that will be...)

Contact him for more info.

Cheers!!

Thanks Mark for the kind words.
To all, I will be starting a build thread in a few days to try my wraps out, and give you an idea how they will look.
I will make the wraps available then. I hope they work as well as I think they will.

Okay,

Finally starting to get caught up on some of my winter builds. Had to wait for better painting weather before I could proceed on this one.

Managed to get the tubes primed and painted gloss white.

I then took saluki's magnificent wraps and printed them on waterslide decal paper with my laser printer.

I shot a couple of coats of clear over the decals before cutting them out. I applied them in 3 sections per tube.

I believe I will shoot flat clear over all the parts that have decals before assembling to protect from scratching.

This is truly an exercise in sequential assembly so as to get the wraps and paint to work together.

More work on the fin can.

Again, saluki's fabulous wraps that I printed to waterslide paper.

I learned my lesson about trying to use too big a section and the decal started to stretch. After that, smaller sections were cut and let sit in the water for about a minute.

A nice slide and no stretch.

I am going to shoot a coat of clear on this, then mask and paint the appropriate fins black. Then, shoot flat clear over the whole assembly.

This is a beautiful build, it's making me regret that I built my Saturn 1B last summer.

The kits are gone, but a quick skim of the instructions suggests that the main non-standard tubes, the eight BT-51Ns, are still in stock at Semroc, as is the bottom BT-101T. Might be possible to build a kit up from those. You'd still have to make the rings, star supports, etc, of course.

More work done.

Was able to paint sub assemblies and then assemble them.
