And for those that know the history of my ex, I have signed up for a CC class Sunday. My Springfield XD-S hasn't come in yet but I can get the permit anyway.
Man that is a great little gun....

Very well done! I don't know how much training you've had so far, but I think everyone that plans on owning a gun should know how to use it, know about gun safety, and practice shooting it. A lot.

Someone close to me bought a gun many years ago for home protection, put it in a box in the closet, and for 10 years never took it to the range to shoot it a single time. If they'd had trouble and needed the gun, they wouldn't have known what to do and would be better off leaving it in the box.

Back during the Clinton administration there was all this similar talk about gun bans and the government circumventing the 2nd amendment. I'd been thinking of getting a gun already but went ahead and got one just in case a law was passed that would keep me from getting it. I spent untold hours in the range learning how to shoot with it and to become plenty accurate. I wouldn't practice with the target far away either, I'd be practicing at what I thought the distance was across my bedroom, or down the hallway in my house. I could turn around, grab the gun, aim, and put a bullet in between the intruder's eyes very quickly. I also own 2 magazines that hold 17 bullets each, and keep one loaded with hollow points where I can get to it quickly if I need to.

Want to know what the VERY best thing to have, to make sure you're awake and alert when an intruder breaks into the house?

A dog.

Take care of yourself, Layne.

Hopefully this will all have been for naught and you can get back to a normal life.

From Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons: "In my hour of darkness, in my time of need, oh Lord grant me vision, oh Lord grant me speed."

Let mine expire four years ago, I don't carry on my person, just keep one close when ever in a vehicle or home. In Fl a permit isn't needed to carry in a vehicle, any way when they come to round up the guns, (and they will come) the first ones they will come after is those with permits, they'll have names, numbers and addresses already on file from what ever state one is in.

I've had my concealed carry permit since I was 24... which was, um... 18 years ago. If I'm not actually on the ambulance (where we're not permitted to carry by both state and company), I usually have something on me. Its caliber usually starts with the number "4."

:) like to hear it!
we are in line to get some "simunitions" training, in threat awareness and response...
a lot of people don't realize, when you need to react, your body undergoes a natural reflex to "do nothing", and freeze up.
the reason is, you haven't been punched, kicked or stabbed yet.. your still prepossessing, and nothing is instinctive. by the time that happens, your too late to do yourself any good! Not to mention the absolute rage you will feel directly after being assaulted....

Good luck, it's your duty to protect yourself!!!
the training is fun too...

Do what you can to get punched in the face, shot at, and thrown to the ground... the police and military do this for a reason.... we should to!!!

P.s. if any one wants to punch me in the face.... just sayin! :) happy weekend!!!!

Good for you!!! That XD-S is a nice one! Fondeled a few at the NRA convention. At the shot show this year they came out with a 9mm version, but the 45 is the way to go!
Hopefully you wont have to use it, but if it's needed at least you'll be prepared

I'll never be able to have one all because I'm OCD. Freaking lame I can't even buy a gun. I'm not mentally unstable I'm just a germaphobe.

It's sad that people are going after the mentally ill. Less then 7% commit a violent crime. I would point out that DUI/DWI's kill more people a year then a mentally unstable person with a gun. So do drug addicts.

I should have added that getting the permit is only the first step, Layne. You should invest in some serious training, at least an 8 hour class but preferably a two to four day class. If all else fails, there are training DVDs and online sources for training videos.

My tagline from another location in the wilderness of the interwebs:

'To ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth.'

'μολὼν λαβέ'
- Leonidas, King of Sparta, 540-480 BC
'Come and take it'
- Texian Flag, 1835 AD

Told you I was an honorary Texan.

From a sticker I bought at Arizona Mountain Man Days - "Guns are for people that can't throw a knife or use a lariat."

It's not an anti-gun statement, it's a pro-resourceful statement.

So your OCD diagnosis prevents you from purchasing a firearm?
Something seems very wrong with that. You're not psychotic, paranoid or violent so what is the official reason?

When the ad came out in National Rifleman I was very interested, then when the local range added one to their stable I was hooked. Just unbelievable Springfield could produce a reliable, controllable and not unpleasant to shoot full.45 that will drop in your pocket. Why did you go 9mm?

Living in California might be a factor? It's like a whole different planet...

I haven't tried to buy one and I don't want too. I don't want to deal with the head aches it might cause. But basically anyone with a mental illness can not own a fire arm. Felons and the mentally ill can't own guns. OCD is a mental illness and I do go to therapy/counseling once a month for it. Granted I only go now to make sure I don't form any rituals. I don't like taking the medications for it because they make me really mello. I'm never happy never sad just okay. If I don't take the medications and don't go see a therapist every so often it can start to effect my life. I'd give examples but basically wash my hands to much and dry them out.

Now granted I can understand a paranoid schizophrenic or other class 2 mental illnesses from having a weapon.

But I'm happy your going to get your concealed carry. Hopefully you'll never need it. I've been on a few ride a longs with PD. if you knew half of the stuff that goes on around cities you would want one. Most of the crime doesn't make the paper anymore. I really hope that this thing with your ex just blows over and no one gets hurt.

I do have pepper spray though. A lot of people under estimate it.

That's the "Peoples Republic of California", pardner.

Today's newspaper headline featured much wailing and gnashing of teeth as demographic data now shows that the working and otherwise monied folks are moving out of the state for other locations and leaving the "older and poorer who require more expensive government services" behind. Arizona, Texas, and Nevada are the destinations of choice apparently. Fortunately, immigration from overseas just about offsets the exodus of fleeing Californians. Unfortunately, the immigrants are counted among those needing "expensive government services".

As Margaret Thatcher famously said "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." LOL!

The advice for continuing training is well taken. I've been a responsible firearm owner for almost 37 years, the type of gun owner the national media never considers, and love to shoot. Shooting a rifle from only a bench and a pistol from a single position is not conducive of real world shooting skill. Wish there was a local 3 gun range, or even a small combat range would be nice. If I had the property to build on, I'd have my own CQB house.

One of the reasons I miss Tennessee is that I could drive a few minutes in any direction and be in an abandoned strip mine. My favorite was 400 yds long and over 20' deep on all sides, perfect for simulated combat shooting, long and short range, pistol and rifle. Here in Arkansas, almost all land is State, Federal or private, and I found out the hard way what all that purple paint means. Left that pit a little wiser and two new tires later.

The CC permit is something I have wanted for a while, but just needed this last push to make the commitment, and it is a commitment. Those that carry concealed represent the common shooter and must consider the impact of their actions on the shooting public and our 2nd Amendment Rights. We all know that if a law abiding citizen defends themselves, or prevents a crime the news gets buried or under reported. But if there is an accident or some way for the national media put a negative spin on an incident, it will get sloshed on the public relentlessly.

So, in short...
Shooters Represent!
*doughy white boy attempt at gang sign*

Well, I did my share of Second Amendment work today.

Signed up four brand spanking new members to the NRA and I'm not even an official recruiter!

And...I scored a box of Winchester PDX1 in 12 gauge at the local Wally Whirled. Everybody cheer!!

HA! Heard about this.... I call it "Liberal Flight"...
Continually elect extreme *political slur* only to flee the system they created.

If you scored ammo you are lucky, stores in this state are limiting purchases to just a few boxes to allow more shooters to get ammo.

OCD can be debilitating, but it sounds like you have it under control. Bravo!
We have an OCD individual in our office and everyone has to cope and adjust behavior to create a productive work environment. She and I are polar opposites, everything in her office has a place and must return to that place after use, my office looks like a rocket warehouse/toy store wrapped in a clown blew up all over.
