Website Administration using Joomla! v1.0.12

Hey all,

I'm currently working on updating my church's website. It's a bit of a hobby for me to work on these things, and currently I am a bit lost.

The website can be found here: www.stpetevineyard.org

I'm currently working on updating the photos to something more recent, and also changing the music on the photos page to more upbeat music.

The problem is that I'm having trouble finding out how to update the photos because when the website was first designed/published, the writer used a program called FotoPlayer, which by all that I can tell, was a free trial that I can't update. I am pretty sure that the music is integral to the program that they used.

If there's anyone out there that's used Joomla! and knows what I am talking about and how I might can fix it, that would be awesome.

I can't help but for what is worth, I hate music on webpages. My advice to our church webmasters is not to use any.

Maybe its just me.

My website uses joomla so I do have some experience, although my son is the real expert. I'll talk to him tonight and send you a email or PM.

The first thing I'd recommend is that you upgrade to Joomla 1.5.9 to take care of any security issues that have been fixed. Then visit https://www.joomla.org and have a look at the extensions available there - I'm sure you'll be able to find something to address your needs.

I'm on Joomla 1.5.7 -- my web host set me up before Christmas. I didn't want to try to set up the system, or do a local install, I just wanted to create the website with minimal fuss and no HTML coding. I went to Joomla since it is pretty simple to get going.

It is a little different than doing HTML pages, but extensions like shopping carts are available for free -- Joomla is open source. My website is pretty basic now, and I've spent maybe 2 days total to get it to where it is. One day to get the basics going, and another day to add pictures, drop in some links, etc.

All you really need to do is find the right extensions or plug-ins to make some pretty impressive websites. There is a ton of Joomla help out there, as well as some good books on the subject.

Please don't use music. I immediately navigate away from any site that starts playing music. If you must, you could use a small flash music player that does not start until the user clicks play. If you search, you can probably find a premade one that lets you configure parameters like autostart so you don't have to mess with making a player in Flash.

Right now I have some mystery music playing on my computer. I was browsing with my sound muted, and apparently a site I went to had music. I have quite a few tabs open, so it might still be open. The problem is that I'm using Firefox 3.1 Beta, and it has a bug that it often keeps playing stuff after I close a tab (for example, a youtube video will keep playing for a few seconds after I close a tab. Some stuff will play until I restart Firefox.)

Background music is one of the few things that will make me leave a website and never return. Takes too long to load, and it's just flat-out annoying. If I had the authority I would make putting midi-background music on websites an 8th deadly sin.

My day job is as a Joomla developer. I write components, modules, mambots/plugins and create Joomla templates from Photoshop mockups for a living.

You web site is running the 1.0 version of Joomla. The latest version is version 1.0.15. You can install a patch to update your version to this version by going here: https://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/?action=FrsReleaseBrowse&frs_package_id=3365

Select the Joomla 1.0.12 to 1.0.15 Stable Patch and follow the instructions. Since you are not experienced with Joomla, I do not recommend that you make the switch from Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 1.5. It is not a simple upgrade for those without some experience.

Pay particular attention to the "Tutorials" link.

That said, your photo gallery is not a Joomla-based product. The previous developer just wrapped another URL with Joomla, using the Joomla Page Wrapper option. The URL being "wrapped" with the Joomla template is: https://www.stpetevineyard.com/jalbum/

This URL points to a directory on the stpetevineyard.com web site that uses the JAlbum FotoPlayer Flash-based photo gallery software. You can find out more about this software here: https://www.fotoplayer.com/index.html

You will find an online help guide there at: https://www.fotoplayer.com/userguide/

Basically what you need to know is this: FotoPlayer does not require you to buy a license. You can if you want, and doing so will remove all of the links in your galleries to FotoPlayer and JAlbum.

All you have to do to create a new photo gallery is download the most recent version of FotoPlayer from the link above and install it on your computer. Set your preferences and then create a photo gallery. When finished, you upload it to the web site in the "jalbum" directory.

You probably want to preserve the older photo galleries, and in order to do that, you may need to get the preferences and files from the original developer to set up your installation of FotoPlayer the same. You will need to define the color of the menu links FotoPlayer generates anyway, as I am sure the olive color the current site is using was defined by the original developer. If you don't care about the older files, just replace what's there with your new gallery.
