Wow, this is great stuff. Thank you Bobby. Most appreciated. Amazing how many launches took place at the Wallops Island facility on the eastern shore of Virginia. During my Navy days while assigned to one of many ships in Norfolk, I would pack up my old 74 Ford F100 with the camping gear and make the trek across the 13 mile bay bridge just to watch a launch. Lots of fun, spectacular photographs and excellent seafood afterwards.
I was talking to an old timer at Wallops and he told me a story that in Wallop's early days
the way they calibrated the radar there was to fire a 22 rifle in front of the dish and they
knew the velocity of the 22 bullet so if radar reading was the same then all was good
