I plan to kit bash with a fin unit from an Estes Generic E2x.

Being BT50, has anyone stuffed an Estes D or E in one?
Yep. First I bashed the kit - longer Bt making a total length of nearly 22". Transitioned to a wider BT on the aft end, larger basswood fins, 24 mm screw on retainer. Needed significant nose weight, took the opportunity to install in a dowel sideways and epoxy shreds of lead. With all this weight, glued another dowel length wise to provide a stronger shock cord attachment point. With a D-12 motor it was SAYONARA!
It disappeared into the clouds, never to be seen again.

I lost my C6-5 Powered Mini Honest John today, but it was it's 3rd flight so I'm all good. Time to make another one. Flew a lot higher than expected with that nose cone, perhaps it's not as bad aerodynamically as I expected.

Extra nose weight was added to the 18mm and 24mm birds.
Also the 24mm has a streamer instead of a chute.
13mm and 18mm flights were straight and nominal.
The C11 motor in the 24mm bird CATO'd about five feet above the launch rod.
Video shortly on Ronz Rockets "Update" thread and on You Tube.
EDIT: Video is up already. Wow the man is fast.

And a screenshot of the CATO:

I thought Estes motors D and under were more or less CATO-proof.
A10 minis have been CATOing like crazy on us. Easily a dozen over the past few months.
And I have had two C11 failures over the past few months.
One had an ejection failure. The charge never went off. Clay cap was still on at recovery.
And of course the CATO above.
ANY motor can CATO.
