TRF put toilet paper ads on my pictures

The question of covering signatures, copyrights, trademarks etc. is a big enough issue that a civil case is probably going to go forward soon. This will have implications for the exact alterations I am squawking about here. The fact this is a free to use site has no bearing on the issue.

The original images were definitely not altered by TRF. All of my images are served by photobucket.

BTW, I am also a (retired) web developer.

is it posible that photobucket is the one who overlay ?

Now I don't see them anymore, logged in or out. At least on Nathan's 29mm thread. Maybe it's a transient that will come and go?

I've already spent too much time posting about this...whatever keeps my TRF going....

Death, taxes and commercials... I find all three objectionable but have come to terms that there is little that can be done about them.

It's true that we are the product. If the ads become too intrusive then the product will go away and no one wins. Lose the master builders and designers then what's the point of coming here? The surest way to lose contributers is to offend them by covering their master works with TP ads.

My point is, you can do something about it. I am and it might be working, and all will benefit if it does.

I am not a product, that's some screwed up thinking there. We are not goods or products. Really, be a human being. Statements like "I am a product" really makes me wonder about people I thought I knew something about.

I don't understand, is my asking it be reconsidered objectionable?

That's not what I'm saying at all. I think my message is getting lost in the lack of context that comes from communicating via keyboard. I'm saying it doesn't really bother me probably because I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I can see how it would bother someone who is indeed an artist. Therefore, I think I see where you are coming from, but my completely different perspective makes me both unable to fully understand it personally, and leaves me overall less concerned than you. I'm not saying your concern is wrong, just that I don't share it.

You really should, this IS one of those scenarios where the neighbors do nothing as others are diminished.

Now, it all makes sense now!
I posted a pic in the research section the other day of a thrust profile but, the preview jpg was X out for some reason..... They embedded ads into it causing Chrome to block the image!
I love how they tell you about all these " new features" up front ( sarcasm).

I too always Log in, so I don't care.

I'm kinda disappointed. I have not seen one toilet paper ad. A few other ads after I logged out...but not a big deal.

I wonder why there are no ads once you log in. Maybe this is to avoid violating the old terms of service in effect when existing members joined, and/or maybe to protect the interests of the rocketry advertisers currently running the banner ads.

Or maybe this is a limited rollout of the new ad capability for test purposes.

Full disclosure: I work for a company that runs digital advertising for clients, so my curiosity here is professional.

I think we should all watch and contemplate the movie "Brazil". There is truth in it.

The thing to remember here, is we don't own this space. We have no right to it. We do still have rights while here, however they can be limited by the owners to a point.

And in the end, you have to right to not use this site. If you deem it beneficial to be here, you have to take it how it is. It's their site now, and if they want to post a big orange monkey wearing a dog costume over every photo, they absolutely have that right.

While I enjoyed the movie "Brazil", the only truth I'd ascribe to it is that Terry Gilliam is mad as a hatter ! The monitization of the internet may be an historical inevitability but I would hope the owners of this sandbox will heed some constructive feedback. Modifying any pictures I post here will result in me not posting pictures

I never forgot that.

If you don't give feedback, how will they know what we can tolerate and what we won't? What if by saying nothing, they think you like the big orange monkey wearing a dog costume over every photo?

Do you like the big orange monkey wearing a dog costume over every photo?

I will not be assimilated. Resist.

Yeah, I agree with you Shrox...

If this becomes commonplace around here, I think most of the serious rocketeers will dump this forum for YORF...

Where's RP when you need them??

Later! OL JR :)

I don't see any problem with letting them know we dislike it. But getting into discussions about being a product/no I am human/they have no right to cover my work is all moot.

Couldn't agree more... right on, Shrox!

This sort of thinking is absolutely asinine... I don't understand how thinking people with a free will allow themselves to be exploited this way...

Oh well... sign of the times I guess.

I ignore 99.995% of all advertising... most of it now is SO stupid that it's beyond belief... and the SUREST way of making me determined NOT to purchase your product is to ram it down my throat via advertising...

I wouldn't do business with telemarketers and certain insurance companies if they were the last ones on Earth providing that product because of their practices like this...

Guess I'm hopelessly old-fashioned...

Later! OL JR :)

I've implied it in the past and maybe I should have been more clear back then: I'll gladly pay to help keeping TRF running an clean - just like I do it for Wikipedia. Both are valuable resources to me.

I won't see those new ads, because I stay logged in and I also use an ad blocker*), but I'd still pay to know that these new ads aren't even there. In my personal opinion - and it is only my personal opinion - those new ads make TRF look shabby, both because of their obnoxious form and the completely unrelated content. I've encountered many forums with this type of ads in the past and I didn't consider registering there for a second. I'm afraid the ads might turn other potential new users away.

*) TRF and the now defunct RocketryPlanet, among few others, are whitelisted, but know that I look at it, it appears that another plug-in (probably Ghostery) that I installed later killed the ad provider regardless.

Precisely why I keep saying we should all complain.

So say we all!

I don't agree, if they want to sell ads, they need members or else they have nothing to sell.

We could always meet at another pub.

Uh oh! Now you're just getting Crazy! I kinda agree with you on Principle.
My Rockets may not always look the greatest, but I take Pride in trying to make them nice, so to see them covered up by an Advertisement would feel like a Punch in the Gut.
