It took 2 attempts but I completed my level 1 certification. The first flight my nosecone came out early causing the shock-cord to snap.

The second flight was completely successful, but drifted a bit further than expected and landed in the back yard of some near by trailer homes. Some kids found my rocket before we got there and one of them ran off with my nosecone when they saw us. The others brought my rocket to me, but then took off after him. I waited a bit but they never came back and I couldn't tell where they went. I figured if they wanted it that bad they could have it. So now I have my cert but a nose-less rocket.

My flight is the second of the three in this video.

I built an Estes Pro Series II Leviathan for the cert attempt and sent Estes an email asking if a replacement nosecone could be purchased. It has been a few weeks now and haven't heard back from them yet. I was planning on trying to call them sometime this week if I can get off work early enough. Does anyone know if a replacement would be available and if so how much they would be?

This is actually the only rocket I currently have. I've been out of the hobby for about 12 years now and after a few move my collection faded away. I figured a level 1 was a hell of a way to get back in the game :).

on a side note I have no idea how to get the embedded video to work so I changed them to links.

Congratulations on the cert. That is a sharp looking rocket. What motor did you use ?

If you'd like to fly with a group check out www.dars.org

p.s. I don't think Estes stocks a lot of spare parts anymore so your choices may be another Leviathan or a Big Daddy.

Yaaay. Estes has spare parts. I stand corrected, thanks fellas.

Me neither. Sorry. Somewhere here there is a link to a Estes Pro Series site about them selling parts for the Pro Series, too. That should have your cone also.

I'm confused. How did you get your cert if you don't have a flight ready rocket? And how did the kids take the cone from the rocket? Did you have a chute attached to the cone and come down in 2 pieces?

I think Balsa machining sells a 3 inch nose cone for $12 that fits their 3 inch tubes. I plan on picking a couple up here soon. I know the Big Daddy NC fits right into their 3 inch tubes.

And uber congrats on your L1 cert. It feels reallt good to get it out of the way and makes for a fun day.

It was launched on an H128W. The cone was on a quick link and they took it off. The cert official could see the rocket coming down with the cone attached. The rocket itself was in perfect condition on recovery.

I have been wanting to get out to a DARS launch, but for the last couple of months it has been on a weekend I've had other things. My wife's graduation (M.S.) last month and this weekend my wife and I were at Warbirds over Texas helping a friend (my cert official) do a demo of a ME 163 Komet launched on an I (https://youtu.be/-1_pQj9kM2Q).

Thank you guys for the link. I just ordered a replacement, she will fly again.

Wow. What is wrong with out society when a man's nosecone isn't safe?!!! I can't believe they would take that. If you are going to steal a part of someone's rocket that isn't the part to take. lol. Hopefully you catch the little bas...

Dude, they took the nosecone off and ran???????? What nerve.....someone needs a good A$$ whipping. Congrats anyway!

Why didn't you say you know Dave and Dr. Ken ?!? Very cool that you got to see the Komet fly; I saw it up close at an event in Celina last December but it was too windy to fly. Thanks for posting that video.

This is an amazing video. And, yeah, me too --- didn't even know it was a thing.

It seems like the weirdest most pointless thing. More like vandalism than theft. They can't possibly actually WANT a nosecone, so it is basically just screwing over the owner for no gain for themselves.
