What did you do rocket wise today?

When you have a payload it's cheap insurance to have a screamer, another nifty trick is a kite flasher. Fresh batteries and both have been known to run for hours. The kite flasher is for, of course, night use. Lose it in the day, come back at night and find easily.

Where can you find a kite flasher at and do they add much extra weight? This was only a CC Express I'm wondering if the fob camera may have been pushing the weight thing. And what's a screamer?

Oh yeah, went back out there today, beat the grass, cedar scrubs, every dinky little wash-out I could find and came up with nothing. Even took a younger set of eyes. There was even an old wooden crate tossed into one of the washouts and I checked it in the astronomical chance that it landed in it...zilch. The only possible explanation...aliens. If I were looking for jackrabbits and golf balls it would have been a huge success. Live and learn I guess. Three hours of combing that landscape; I don't think it was meant to be recovered.

Unfortunately, you may have to wait for fall or winter, when all the leaves fall. I always print my name and cell phone number on the parachute/streamer, for just such events.
I hope you get it back!

This is the best I can do for now, the kite strobe seems to have dropped from the market. These fishing strobes have a 300 hourlife but say they are water activated. I suppose an enterprizing person could add a switch.

The screamer is just what it sounds like, a noise maker. Estes used to make one. I also suppose that a yelper can be made easily from parts, just need to do a little research. I've built curcuits without any real knowledge of what I was doing...like THAT is going to stop me :)

Well, this was actually yesterday, but it was a long day and today was Mother's Day.

That's my dead Estes Rascal upscale, victim of an Estes E9-4 CATO.

Three flights later.....

My FSI Dart clone, victim of an E9-8 CATO.

And finally......

My Estes Ventris, victim of an Estes F50-6T that acted more like an F50-2T. Nose cone and payload section separated and left for parts unknown. Body tube did a free fall to the asphalt below.

So, how was your weekend?

...note to self: no E9's. :p

Moved all the rockets out of the rocket room to rebuild the rack that is supposed to hold them. We could only get about half of them on the rack, and the others were scattered around the room and had started taking over the front room too. If we include the seven builds on the floor in front of the futon, we have 38 rockets!

Yeah there is another 3" Darkstar back with the storage boxes, but it's not ours, I think we are hiding that from Mark's mother.

nice collection, the Xmass tree is also a rocket ?, I see a tube at the botton,

Yeah, the little Christmas tree is a rocket. Hasn't flown yet, but it has a MMT for an E-12. Not sure about how flight worthy it is, can't seem to get Openrocket components to match up....

2 days ago at this point - I was at the LUNAR launch at Nasa Ames on saturday. Mostly helped kids get rockets hooked up correctly on the pads, but I did take advantage of a slow period (both in # of launches and wind) to put up my swift boost glider. Got 2 great flights on it.

Right at the end of the day a family came to the safety check table with an unassembled estes helicat. They had thought it was a Ready to Fly kit, and hadn't opened the box until at the site. The kid (and his parents) were looking kind of bummed and wanted to know if there was anything they could do to get something in the air. I happened to have some field repair / quick building supplies in my box, so I pulled them aside and ran an impromptu "Helicat QuickBuild" session with them. Behind me the LCO and RSO were breaking down the remainder of the launch equipment, but kept 1 pad set up. It was a race against the clock as we were coming up to the closing of the waiver. I had the RSO give it a once over when it was finished and we decided to swap the c6-5 (all the family had) with a b4-2 at the last minute because the winds had started to pick up. Launch went perfectly, the rocket weather-cocked substantially and stayed pretty low, the nosecone copter and chute deployed perfectly, the rocket was recovered intact (I chased it as the wind dragged the body down the tarmac) and we made the family's day.

(Also, according to club records, we burned our 50,000th motor on Saturday.)

Opened the packages that had arrived while I was away and fondled the rocket related materials.... Sanded a 3" nose cone to fit the tube. Still seems a bit snug, but I ran out of time.

I work on my dedicated rockets shop today, I install 2 x 10 feet bench , and 2 computer desk.

Medal of Honor for you and the team! Something to be proud of. You will probably see them back. :)

Thanks, ad yes I'm pretty sure they'll be back. They signed up for family membership, but I'm not sure if that was on the way in or on the way out. In any case, we all try to do whatever we can to not send folks home disappointed. :)

Started building a Big Daddy I will use for my L1 attempt this Saturday. Fins, rings, and bulkhead were cut from ply by Krusty. 29MM flying on a H128 cert special from red arrow. I really hope that package shows up in time. Been a couple weeks, but I hear Dave is a good guy and am not too worried because Golfpro62 found a 29MM case and reload he will be willing to sell just in case. Off we go rocketry will be a vendor at the launch as well.

I have said it many times, but TRF rules and I am very grateful to the folks here who have sort of mentored me to get me to the point that I am even considering going for a L1 in a couple days. Thanks guys.

Got up at 3:30A and worked on rockets with my son who had to stay up all night. He worked on a Madcow Honest John and I continued on the Jart. Got confirmation for a school van to haul rocket club kids to the THOR launch on Saturday. Turned another ejection charge holder on the lathe in the metals shop. Launched rockets (Jim Flis' Midnight Expresses and and Applewhite Stealth on an F-20?) with the seniors (their last day) in my science class to finish up the flight unit. Most of them never saw a rocket launch before, let alone build one and launch it. They had a good time launching them and a few screamed/squealed with surprise when the F-20 went off. :D

I plan on wrapping up the epoxying on my 5" DD Jart tonight. I could almost fly it as a single stage at the moment; it just needs two epoxy fillets, airframe holes, and nosecone shoulder. Bonus points if I get around to importing some files to cut the vinyl for it. Looking forward to Saturday's launch. I don't put much stock in extended forecasts, but things are looking decent weather-wise.

Gary (Off We Go) had something come up, and he can't make it. One way or another, we'll find you a motor!

Bummer, but thanks for the heads up. Right now I have only two F24-4W and a G64-4W reloads on hand. If nothing else I will enjoy watching others fly. Seems my brother and nephew will be headed out to the launch as well. He has a Der Red Max that has flown on a C6-5 I bet he would love to launch.

Don't forget the nose weight for the big daddy or you'll have a crazy flight!!

(It's listed in the Rocksim file)

Steve,

I just got a bunch of 29mm CTI H motors. One is now reserved for you. :D I'll PM you with the choices in a bit, but they are all 3 or 4 grain.

You'd be surprised how many new and old timers (especially old timers) are not on TRF because they perceive us as talkers and not do'ers. I know I personally think they are completely wrong (I being in the top 10 posters). I have learned more here reading and observing other's build threads than I'll ever learn offline. And I can do it at my own pace and when *I* have time.

TRF does rule.

And good luck on the L1!!!!

Awesome, thanks, Doug!

I just checked my stash, and the only motors I have that would be good for a Big Daddy are Skids.....and, well, we don't do those at our field.

(For those wondering why, we launch of grass, and the fire risk is too high -- Skids belong on DIRT)

You really need to find a way to trade those off or burn them! ;)

Not having a sim in front of me, its seems to me any big baddy with enough nose weight to L1 on, would launch fine on a G64-4. It's 3 inches in diameter and over a pound yes??

Doing a Rocksim of Bad Dog's Redemption. (Refer to post #1854) Waiting for thrust rings from Uncle Mike's so I can get back to the "Fantasy" build.
