What are the details on the Freedom Launch in SC? Scheduled Start/End times? Fees? Who can fly? Venors? I came to 2022 NSL at Dalzell with my grandson just to watch. Now I want to bring him back to fly some.

I'm not a facebook guy, but here is the facebook page for the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rocketrysouthcarolina/

The schedule per the regular website is: https://www.rocketrysouthcarolina.org/pages/LaunchSchedule/

As far as my personal experiences from past Freedom Launch events (maybe not current procedure):

Start/End time - no clue about start time, but end time is either when launching slows to a snails pace, weather issue or dusk.

Fees: I don't think there are extra fees because of the Freedom Launch. I know member fees are different than non-member, but I suspect if you tell them you came to NSL and want to fly for the first time with your grandson at the club, your fee will be quite-quite low.

Who can fly: For LPR, I think anyone can fly. For HPR, you need to be certified to the level you're flying or attempting a cert.

Vendors: I know Ken from Performance Hobbies is typically onsite, but it is good to verify, as he travels up and down the East Coast. Check his website and/or above sites. I know other vendors show up from time to time, but NSL had more vendors than I've ever seen on-site with my own eyes. There isn't a regular food vendor, but it would be good to clarify for Freedom Launch as maybe they arranged something. The BBQ trailer that was there at NSL was awesome! If they show up again, I'm going to pack a cooler to bring home!

I'm 99.9% sure if you show up and introduce yourself to Chuck, Bridgett, Bobby or others during check-in, let them know you had fun and NSL and want to fly with your grandson, you'll have a very nice welcome.

As a counterpoint, I will say that 1 time out of 100, some people (not club officers, just all people in general) might seem a bit short. It could be the tons of people trying weird flights, the temperature (bring lots of water!!!!) or the bad hamburger eaten on the road to the launch. The fliers at the club are all good people. If someone seems overly focused on their own stuff or is short in a conversation, just move on down the line and you'll find plenty of people willing to talk, help etc.

I hope to see you there!

Sandy.

That is a pretty good summary. Do you have any questions?

Thanks Sandy. That's what I was looking for. I'm not on Facebook, but I'll have my wife look it up and get any details that are there. You are absolutely right about the BBQ guys. That was great food. And getting to talk to all the vendors was one of the reasons I went to NSL, other than launches of course.

I did find nearly everyone I spoke to was very friendly and inviting. The only ones that weren't were obviously "focused" on their prep work. It didn't bother me. I understand.

Chuck, I think only 2 questions. Start time on Saturday (barring a crop dusting), and will Port-a-Johns be available? If I have any more after we check out the Facebook page, I'll reach out.

Allen

10 am - 11 am depending on the number that show up for set up.

Port-a-potties. God I hope so (just kidding). We will have a few.

I assume there will not be an on-site vendor for food, but obviously you can confirm or deny that assumption.

No food. I carry my own. I can try next year if there is interest.

I'm sure for most launches that makes sense, but I hope the BBQ truck had a good weekend at NSL. Not sure what the threshold for a food truck is (25 people vs 500 people??? No clue, but I'm sure they want volume to pay the bills).

As an aside, I wish we could request an ice cream truck (like when we were kids) before random events (rocket or otherwise). I can only imagine the range would practically shut down when hearing the van pulling on property playing the tunes on a 90 deg day. . . They'd make a quick buck from me at least! Its got to be harder for a vendor on-site all day, but a truck pulling in and out in the span of 20 minutes would probably generate a pretty good dollar per minute. I don't even know if they still exist. . .

I'm planning to be there, I didn't find any registration, I take it we just register at the launch..?

From my past experience, it is just a really popular and fairly big regional launch, not requiring any preregistration. I've been off and on since the early 2010's and it has always been a big launch when I've gone and lots of neat stuff flies, but otherwise, it has the club launch feel, just with a bigger crowd. Having said that, I don't know many regional US launches that people fly from Germany to attend multiple times. . . @Leo :)

Looks like I'm not going to be able to make Freedom Launch this year. I'm pretty sure that the XYL and I will be able to make the ICBM launch in November, however.

Think Ken will be at that launch?

Outside of a chance of rain on Saturday, The weather looks decent and we will push forward with Freedom Launch In Dalzell, SC.

I'll be there :) A couple commercial and some Rx, including 18 mm E13, F23, and E33.Planning on flying a 18 mm rocket with an F23 and tracker:)

I am planning to be there on Saturday around midday. I will have some HPR new kits for sale. I will be driving the Tesla Model Y SUV with a Thule on top if anyone wants to come by and check out the kits!

By the way, I loved the BBQ truck at the NSL. Any chance they could make a quick drive-by? If not this time, maybe in the future?

I may or may not have spent a huge amount of money at NARAM on the ice cream van.

The ice cream truck is an interesting idea. In may, we could have paid for it.

Is there any chance the pit area got mowed?
I'm sure hoping that this turns out to be the best day of rocketry in my life. the graphics on my rockets with their automotive paint jobs should be some of the best looking rockets at this event.;)

Congrats to @hobie1dog for a successful level 1. Sometime 3 times is a charm.
After the launch of the Diablo and making the mistake of not cutting down the delay of 14 seconds (yes, I'm not too smart and lack actual experience), and finding out that the Top Flight shroud lines all ripped apart because of the excessive descent speed, I was even closer to quitting the hobby. I was shocked to see the quick response to your request for anyone having a CTI reload for me to try again, and having Paul from Myrtle Beach come up and hand me exactly what I needed. đź‘ŤThen he wouldn't accept payment for it. Ken from Performance Hobbies helped saved the day with a beefy replacement parachute. So the flight went great. The Boy Scout guys even retrieved it for us.:clapping:
So now I have a delay grain tool and won't make that mistake again. Thanks Chuck for helping Holly with loading the rockets out on the rack as well.
