Good news, most of us would not inhale enough to cause an illness unless we work in the factory.

Actually, a number of women have contracted ovarian cancer and sued Johnson and Johnson.

That was from Talcum powder and not asbestos. Asbestos has been tied to a rare lung cancer but only if inhaled and it is usually found i those that also smoke.

And the numbers for Mesothelioma and Asbestosis link the vast majority of occurences to workers dealing with asbestos insulation and products (shipyards, boilermakers, etc) and production/mining of asbestos. The highest occurences were among workers who smoked. Just did my Class IV Asbestos Training last week.

As it applies to model rocketry, just a modicum of common sense would mitigate undesirable consequences. Avoid breathing the talc when dusting your chutes, just as you would spray paint in a well ventilated area. I would also add, avoid intaking the smoke from green propellant motors. The chemical that gives the exhaust the green color (barium?) is not good for you. For that matter, avoid exhaust smoke entirely.
Reminds me of reports a couple of decades ago about factory workers coming down with cancer from the food additive that gives microwave popcorn its' buttery flavor.

Since I believe baby powder is talcum powder, was it ever proven that the talcum was specifically the cause or that just the use of the powder was the cause of the ovarian cancer with the talcum assumed to be the agent responsible since at that time it was the only known component? If the latter, then the asbestos component may be the actual cause of the ovarian cancer and then not only is the powder an ovarian cancer hazard, but also an inhalation hazard for both babies and adults.

From the article, it seems that both the mesothelioma cases and the ovarian cancers might be tied to asbestos contamination of the talc in baby powder.

Although that may be true, there is no definite tie to asbestos and ovarian cancer and it is poorly understood how it could cause ovarian cancer. Although asbestos has been linked to ovarian cancer since the 1970s, no one has been able to establish a mechanism and a link does not mean cause. This is a common problem in medicine. It is clear that NutraSweet consumption is linked to obesity but it is near impossible to say it causes obesity. It is more likely that obese and overweight people are more likely to eat NutraSweet.

It is important not to overact and send fear based on sensationalism meant to sell copies. With that being said, I would not start breathing in baby powder or eating asbestos.

No proof - just a link. There will be a class action lawsuit.

Asbestos free talc, such as that found in modern talcum powder, has been suggested to increase the risk of ovarian cancer in women who apply talcum powder regularly in the genital area. Several studies in women have looked at the possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, with mixed findings. Some studies report a slightly increased risk, while others have found no increase. The evidence is insufficient to conclude that use of talcum powder leads to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. It is also unclear how talcum powder might influence the development of ovarian cancer. The same is true of asbestos.

More research is needed.

Then how does reasonable doubt not come into play causing a loss for any class action lawsuit claiming a tie when none is proven? Should they lose their case? With a jury following the law, they should.

Did California, land of “everything gives you cancer” post about it? We use CA, spray paint, build rocket motors, and lots of other stuff that has the same chance of doing what asbestos does (or worse), yet we still use them.

That's on you pal. You have been warned. Heck, the rest of the free country has been warned too. Those little CA warning stickers are everywhere.

There was a warning label on a kit box (maybe the LJ II?) that said that the state of California has determined that WOOD DUST (!) may cause cancer. So, should I quit building model rockets?

NAH!
