The race is on to get rustoleum base and highlight colour on plastic (QT) in one week.

Today: primer



I have an appt in 20mins. As soon as that’s done, primer will be sanded,
Wiped and rustoleum matte black is going down.

The rustoleum usually need 7days to dry on plastic before it’s ok to put a different colour down.

With rustoleum, the rule is “all on in 60mins, or wait 24hrs” and if plastic “wait 5-6 days...”

We’ve got warm dry weather, so I’m hoping some trips in the sun hanging on the washing line might help... [emoji6]

I've found the duplicolour stuff to be pretty good if you're in a hurry, especially if you can keep it warm. I've painted a QT rocket with 2 colours and clear coat in 3 days in cool weather.

Metalstorm H load toasted the bottom of the rocket nicely and it has rail rash on one side, but still looks OK from 30 foot away!

So, auto filler primer and then sanded with 600grit.

A coat of rustoleum grey primer (no pics, racing the clock) followed by a coat of flat black.




I’ve also done a spare QT tube with the same paint, so I can test the recoat with red on that before I run the risk of ruining the rocket.

Plan is to spray candy apple red over a mosquito net to give me a deadpool costume fabric effect. Fingers crossed...

There's a problem in these pictures: no other rockets in the background.

Have I mentioned I really like the look of those fins? The "swept in" look of the tip edge not parallel to the root edge is just odd enough without being too weird. I don't know why such a small thing becomes so eye catching and pleasing, but there it is.

We are renting, so mounting stuff on the walls is a “no no” Unless we want to patch and paint every room before we leave… I have provisional spousal approval to build a stand and have it live vertically in the corner of the TV room as a display piece…

How about one of these for a stand. Just find an old office chair and make some adaptors. In this case I have bolted a 98mm motor to it. You can also keep the original vertical piece of the chair and just make centering rings to suit.



The chair bases without wheels work best. They slow your spouse wheeling the rocket onto the street for hard-rubbish collection

harumph... bored while I wait for base coat to dry thoroughly before adding the red top coat fabric pattern through a mosquito net...

Decided to start studying for the L2 written test... and getting my explosives license paperwork ready...

L2 exam out of the way.

The impatient one that I am, I started doing small tests for topcoat masks to give a “deadpool suit” fabric texture on a scrap of QT I painted along with the rocket.

First test: mosquito net



I noticed but differences in the weave depending on how tightly it was pulled vertically or horizontally.. might make for some inconsistent texture alignment on different sections of the rocket. Don’t know yet.

I take it back. On second look, the texture in Deadpool's costume does disappear at 10 meters, so the mosquito net nails it. (But the norwex still looks better.)

You sir, have hit the EXACT dilema I have....


Going back to my original renders, the art I assembled had a pattern much closer to the Norwex look, but it was dark and bright red, not black and bright red:


With the mosquito net, one thing that I like is that a little unevenness in the red paint actually gives a "weathered" look to the texture, which is MUCH more like deadpools costume:

Ok, so I decided to go with the mosquito net, in keeping with a real deadpool costume.

All assembled ready for a pinstripe on the rail side so I have somewhere to hide the seam.

Fincan is next... I have an idea on how to get this mosquito net into the space between fins. It involves PVC pipe and a dremel...

A man with a fin can and a plan:

1) remembered how people rolling their own tubes/fins using tape to control fray/stretch enabled fabric. This allowed for a more scientific application of the net to the upper part of the fin can.


2) a bright idea to make a net holder from some old 90mm PVC led to some dremel action and a jig:

All up, in means I have to have a masked tape line around the can above the fins, but it means I *should* be able to paint the fin can in one sitting...

All I can say is it better not rain tomorrow. This fin can should have been painted yesterday... [emoji12]
