Hello everyone. I am in the process of seeking FAA waivers for our club and need some guidance in steps to take. I am looking for any and all info on docs to fill out, information on ceiling restrictions nd airports, generally the whole process. Any reading material is appreciated. I did go to the FAA site and found only info on Drones. Does this apply to rocketry too? Thanks to all.

No. The drone regulations do not apply to hobby rockets. Drones are regulated under Part 107 and rockets under Part 101.

In general, this is correct. However, there may be an exception...the radio control boost glider. This has been discussed in previous threads, so I will let others argue about it if they so choose to do so. This document is enlightening:

IIRC, Frank Burke reported the FAA considers RC boost gliders RC airplanes, thus requiring compliance with the drone rules.

Does your club already have a waiver in place, or are you looking to create a new one?

The recreational use of drones (what the FAA calls an Unmanned Aircraft System, essentially any sort of radio control aircraft) are governed by Section 44809 of the FARs.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/44809

If one is engaging in the commercial use of a UAS system and holds the appropriate operator's certificate, then Part 107 is in effect.

If one adds a radio control system to a model or amateur rocket it becomes a UAS, and would be covered by Section 44809 (for recreational use) or Part 107 (for commercial use).

None of this has anything to do with a waiver, but it is worth pointing out that the waiver process for Section 44809 is completely different than that used for rockets (Part 101).

Part 101 for rockets. Thank you.
