Since the colder months are approaching us, I thought it might be interesting to see what people have planned for their winter projects this year. I have a couple planned so far.
*A Polecat Aerospace 4" Bullpup
*Giant Leap Rocketry Talon 3
*Modifying my LOC Forte for monotube hybrids(Dual Deploy, longer motor tube)

Deuce's Wild reinforced to take 18mm reloads
4" BBX needs paint
"Vanishing Act" - min. diameter rocket for F101's, G55's, or F72's (It also works on C11's, D12's, and E9's, but where's the fun in that? ;))
Scales of Amraam, Sidewinder, and Phoenix missiles (estes components, 18 or 24mm)
Depending on $$$, I may start a 4" DD CF Amraam that I have planned - will also be a summer project (paid for by a summer job) note - this one will proably be my L2 rocket when I turn 18
Various small rockets, expand my LPR fleet
Possibly one of the new Hawks Hobbies 24mm Mars Snoopers

Level One rocket, if I ever find the money to buy the parts.
"Hybrid Theory", a 1.5" rocket for the 29mm Sky Ripper hybrids.
To finish the Two Stage Goblin once and for all,
and a Scale Kits 29mm Alarm.

I'm thinking of maybe building a non-camera rocket, using one of my upscale "Argosy" nosecones. I've sold a lot of them but never built anything with it myself yet.

WHOA! No cameras?!?!

Haha that sounds really cool. A good candidate for that nosecone would be an upscale of the short lived, yet recent, "Venom" kit, by Estes. Nothin special about it but the cone, yet, it's always gotten my attention. Can't wait to see what you decide on.

My winter project is uhh...school haha. Rockets are an almost exclusively summer thing for me. I'm rarely at home on breaks, except Christmas, but I'll be working then. I'll go to a launch here and there (i.e. this weekend--it's Fall Break! heh) but, until the summer, the most I'll do is maybe repair, fix up, and possibly launch a few.

But in the summer.....I have a 6" tube dying to be used!!!!!:D

Well, since I live in FL, I can pretty much build and fly 365 days a year.:D

I think my main winter project will be a Binder Design Raptor so I can go for my L2 come late winter, early spring of next year.:D

I figured it's time to kick things up a notch!!!:D :D :kill:

Don't think I am going to be able to resist the urge to go for a L3 at Southern
Thunder '06. Currently working on drawings for my documentation package.
Oh man this aint gonna be cheap:D

I have most of the parts for a 4/5 scale AIM-54 Phoenix Missile. I have been wanting to build a light weight model for M Hybrids and this is my solution.

Well, this might not be in Carl's league, but my "winter project" has accelerated quite a bit. A 3" AMRAAM for my L1 next spring.

Here it is at its weigh in--2 lbs 8 oz naked minus parachute. The launch rail is 1/2" balsa leading edge.

I've scaled up the Estes AMRAAM decal sheet to go along with my BT-50 downscale and my BT-55 29mm upgrade, all in original Estes livery.

That is a good kit, what my dad got his L1 on.

I've got two major ones:

1. TARC '06, not really a "standard" winter project, but nontheless, a winter project.

2. A 7.5" diameter, 7' tall cluster rocket with a central 75mm motor surounded by 8-38mm motor mounts. Dual deploy and multiple airstart capable.

I have a few:

-Loc Lil Nuke
-PML Small Endeavour (For Level 1 this Spring)
-Upscale 1:1 AGM-114 Hellfire Missile (Eventually Level 2)

This winter i will mainly be building...

public enemy 3" performer (38mm)

attempting a scratch build of a 3" harpoon (2x24mm)

and getting to grips with rail buttons, altimeters and rocksim.

Yup! To paraphrase a certain blue fish in 'Nemo'-

Just keep flying, just keep flying, just keep flying... :)

OK Carl.........

Your "light weight" rocket shows to weigh over 31 lbs!

Can't wait to see pics.

I need to build a replacement for my 7.5" Smoke. I was also thinking of a cluster, a 98 mm and 8 38 mm just fit. I still have the Nike nose cone, so the result is something like this:

My winter projects will be as follows:

Rip out bathroom floor to the beams.
Replace entire bathroom floor.
Rip out old tub.
Replace with new shower stall and move sink.
Rip out rugs in living room and hallway.
Sand hardwood floor and seal.
Finish kitchen walls.

Oh, you mean ROCKET winter projects!

Let's see...

Fliskits Deuces Wild (getting for Xmas)
Several Dr. Zooch kits.
New multi (4-5) launch control.
New multi launch pad.
And a few Thrustline kits as well.

I lived in FL for a long time, and I'd be willing to bet that I have more days that I can fly per year now that I live in the desert where it rains as much in a year as it does in a day back home :D

This winter will be the start of my lvl 3 build. Since I'm a po man I plan to build over the next year and launch at Rocstock in Nov of 06. It'll be an upscaled executioner. 10in diameter, 12 ft tall. A central 98mm that I'll use to cert with and 2-4 54mm outboards for future flights. I imagine I'll be spending most of the winter just trying to build the nose cone properly :)

In 2006 I'll build.....

All the projects I said I'd do in 2005 but didn't have time to :)

I have the CSM/escape tower assembly for my 1/23rd scale Saturn 1B largely built (11.5" main airframe dia)... that was meant to lead on to the 1/23rd scale Saturn 5 (18" dia S1C/S2 stages!)

Trouble with both of those projects is motor cost... The S1b is slated for eight 54mm J's in the booster and a single K in the second stage...the SV was planned for a 4" home-made hybrid in the core with four Pro-54 classic K's around it, four Pro-54 K's in the S2 stage (with flip out fins) and a single K in the S3 stage... 13 seconds of burn including staging delays :) But that's nine K reloads at UK prices!!! :-(

I want to develop an HPR version of the MARS group's 4" dia amateur hybrid motor... 1st version should be a 7ft long 13,000Ns 'N2200' or thereabouts... should provide a cheap way of lifting some very big rockets.

Also want to really do a bigger 'Kone of Koncern'... perhaps twice the size of the original...

And want to do some other 'design' rockets... none of this 3FNC rubbish... perhaps I'll get round to finally building he 'Spirit of Z'Ha'Dum', AKA the 'Shadow Missile'.... twelve foot of tentacle-adorned organic black pure distilled evil.... lots of foam and glass :)

And if that's not enough, I have the parts to build either a 6" dia or a 7.5" dia 'Large Cosmos' Russian launch vehicle (SL8)... which has 'small fin issues' like you wouldn't believe.... but is such a lovely looking rocket at big-scale and no one's done one in HPR yet AFAIK.

One or more of these projects may actually happen if I have any money at all at some stage :)

Ben

Thanks for reminding me Ben.

I want to make a mid power "Cone of Concern". I saw Ben's when I went to EARS last April and fell in love with it.

Ya gotta agree, she's pretty.

Cheers Sandman, appreciate the comments...

Perhaps 2006 will finally see the planned kit of this rocket make it to the market at some scale or another...

Do let me know when you get that modroc version done, can't wait to see it!

Ben

The "Cone of Concern" is soo cool...very nice!

Winter Projects

Deuces Wild
Snarky
I do see at least one Dr. Zooch creation on our list.

Winter projects - I have a garage with electricity and a reasonable amount of free time this winter, so no excuses!

A bunch of un/partially finished modrock stuff. Hydra7 and Rubicon7 in particular. Various other less interesting models that need finishing off.

38mm min-dia rocket w/2-stage recovery via G-Wiz MC, for the WCH H100 hybrid motor. I've got as far as glassing the couplers and building the altimeter bay.

Vaughn Brothers 'BoB'. Not stock, set up for 38mm hybrid motors w/2-stage recovery. I've got as far as installing the motor mount and CF-reinforcing (AeroSleeves) the booster section. Most still to do.

Big 2.6" booster for my L2. Needs to take a 36" motor, will probably fit a 40-odd inch motor no problems. 54mm MMT in that. I keep leaving the tube at home and failing to get it slotted for the fins :-(

So, nothing new. Just everything I'd planned to build, but haven't got round to. Hopefully I'll have something new to fly by the first EARS launch of next year (March).

A couple of rockets for the 38mm SkyRippers
May work a bit more on Level 3
A challenge for ALRS VII (thx to t-rocketry and the guy with the Thor)

I am honestly going to do my best to find some quality build time to repair/replace all of the models in my fleet so that I have somethings that actually *look* nice up close for next year LOL So much of my fleet has become tattered from so much flying that it's embarassing!

Here's hoping for some quality build time!

Hope to finish my 5.5" 4X38mm airstart project originally slated to fly this weekend.....ain't gonna happen. Things keep comming up to push it back. Maybe I'll get it done by next spring. :(

I have some 8" sono-tube in the shop..... :D

This winter I will be mostly building.....

LOC Legacy - mod-ed for use with 29mm SRS hybrids and, quite possibly, dual deployment.
LOC Norad Pro Max - Level 1 project. I'll be lobbing it on a Pro38 for my cert attempt, but I'll make sure the rocket is built hybrid-capable.
Bunch of other lpr kits from my box of unbuilt kits.
