A CMASS member who we will only refer to as J.B. suggested that, since it was difficult to remember what MMMSC stood for, the club needed a nickname he could remember. He came up with Maine Missile Moose and Squirrel Club. I think they need a new logo.

Here is the M engine flight. I hope it gets recovered!

Some onboard videos my dad asked me to post:

My Dad's "Levy 1" on a G80. It was getting windy, and I urged him against this flight, but alas, it was recovered. The view from 1800 feet is quite spectacular :-D

My Dad's "Telemachus". Both my Dad and I were fighting with some older Aerotech motors trying to get them lit.

We should have listened to the Rocket gods. My Buffalo flew into the trees, and Telemachus ended up like this:
Last Photo_smaller.jpg
Turns out the ejection charge on the motor didn't go off. Hopefully AT is as good as everyone says they are and replaces the motor for us...

Here a couple of my videos. They're not spectacular. The first one is Joe Giarusso's level 2 attempt. I was on the other side of the range and shot the video with my iPhone. The interesting part is how YouTube was able to find the rocket and hold it in the center of the frame.

The second one is from one of the cameras on my hybrid powered Corporal. They were there to try to catch the Archetype cable cutter deploying the main chute. Of course the cutter fired when it was out of frame.

Hey Bill,

The date and time are way off!
Now launching on Pad 'B'

He he!

Guess who!

The rocket, Old Salt 306, has not been recovered as of this posting.

Peter has offered a finders fee if anyone can recover it. See this CMASS thread.

Man that stinks! I'll be sure to head over early to go look on the 28th if it remains un-recovered by that time. Looking at the satellite map it looks like there is a logging road on the other side of the river but there is a LOT of woods in there to have to search through.

I wonder if anyone in the club has or knows someone with a RC helicopter or RC airplane with a camera on to fly over the area. I have a feeling that from above you might be able to see it. Maybe even renting a helicopter for a 1/2 hour over the site might help.

I hope that we can get this back to the owner!

Alex - if you find an Arreaux let me know! I'll give a (admittedly small) finders fee for that more for the case and camera than anything else! I don't think that I'll make it out that way before it rains again and at that point locating it might be very difficult!

I have ammased a group of about 4 people at work who will be methodically searching the woods where the rocket was lost around 4ish tomorrow. I will call the turf farm before hand and get the OK for us to possibly be wandering about their field. Our plan is to spread out 250 feet apart (or more) from each-other, and walk into the woods about a mile maintaining the same compass heading. If nothing is found, we will return, move to the left or right about 2000 feet, and go again. Should return at least something. I figure at least the big M rocket will be visible.

Any rockets we find will be posted here, and I will figure out how to return then to their rightful owners. We will not have large sticks for tree recoveries, so in this case we will post an image of the rocket and GPS coordinates.

If we're talking about south of the field (I think we are), the satellite images aren't that fresh. There's new houses on Ridlon road that aren't shown. There's also a significant part of the area that is posted with private property no trespassing you will be prosecuted signs. The logging road does go through, but if it's dry, you'll need at least 4WD, maybe an ATV type vehicle to pass it. If it isn't dry, goodluck. It's not a huge area to walk once you can't go any further with whatever vehicle you have. I wasn't there, but did anyone get a bearing on it before it landed?

We have two videos, each from a different view, of it going down. If we are allowed onto the field we should be able to triangulate a swath where it came down.

Who knows, maybe it landed in someone's backyard! I will be sure to follow the signs as well. Trespassing is something I do not want to do.

Yeah tresspassing is always a bad idea on many levels! You have a good size crew it should be doable with the manpower you have. With 2 videos you should have an idea of at least where to look. Good luck to you!

Excellent plan. Definitely respect private property.

The students from MIT were very fortunate that their M rocket came down in a tree on the property of someone who was very friendly and cooperative. He even went as far as to cut down the tree that held the rocket - well, that's what he thought. He actually cut down the wrong tree. Then he cut down the right tree and the rocket made it back home.

I hope Peter's rocket isn't in that same person's tree (how much can one citizen be expected to do for us) but has ended up in a similarly friendly environment.

If there is some property damage, just get the contact information and back away. Let Scott and Peter know but don't offer up too much info about the NAR insurance coverage.

Happy hunting.
Kenn

I would like to get out and do some recon, but I am also host to three Brits of British Soccer camp for the week and so I am cooking and entertaining. I hope to get out this weekend.

Scott

Me and 2 friends went searching. Also, if you are going to go walking around on the turf farm, definitely call ahead. We did, and if we hadn't it wouldn't have been so great. The farmers were very helpful.

Here's the lowdown:
Apparently there are two rockets in the really tall trees near the Porta-John. They've been there for a while. I didn't see them myself, but they seem to be Initiator-sized.

The Big rocket is definitely not on the turf farm's property. We scouted out where the rocket went in, and there is only about 500 feet of passable woods before you encounter a rather large stream. From what we saw in videos, it is definitely in the property owned by 148 Hubbard Rd. This is surrounded by "no trespassing" signs. We were running out of time, so we couldn't go door knocking, but if anybody knows the phone number of the property owner and can get permission, searching this area should be easy.

A google map of the possible places will be posted shortly. I guarantee any walk around this property will result in rocket recovery of some sort.

Had I seen this yesterday, I would have joined you today. I have a video of a high power launch on Pad "C". Was that the pad Peter launched from? Check my post #62 for possible video..

Alex, first let me say you are doing it the right way! could you drop me an email or call just so I am in the loop on who is searching and where so we do not cover same ground and so I can handle any unhappy people. Thank You

And who is up for a Sat. hunt?

Alan has posted on the thread on the CMASS site about going up this weekend. Get a hold of him to see if you can coordinate.

Kenn

Kenn, I just talked to Scott, We(I) might look today. I will anyway. Saturday too! I just need to know what ground not to cover.

Mission Accomplished!

I found it!

I showed Scott Costigan where it was so I would not have to drive up again this week.
Esay to get to right next to a jeep trail so you can drive right to it and cut down another tree!
It's about thirty feet up. I gave the nose cone to Scott(I was gonna keep it hostage tehe!)
I should start a service! No wait A new reality show, Model Rocket Hunter!

Congrats! I'm assuming that's Hornes mill road. My friends and I were afraid that going down that road violated the no trespassing signs.

Do you have GPS coordinates by any chance? We want to know how close we were...

Also, Here's an image of where we searched. "Untitled place mark" is my best guess as to where it was.

Scott tried to get a GPS but no signal. I found it about 1/3 to 1/2 mile from the house at the end of the road.

for some reason the phone app would not bring up map and the maps app needed to be updated so it may work now but that horse has left the barn, the good news is it is handy to the road, we might try the pole as cutting a tree down with out permission is wrong, and illegal! But not like it has not been done before, so the pole of 35 feet sounds good.
