Hello all,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Dan from the University at Buffalo Students for the Exploration and Development of Space(UB-SEDS), where one of the activities we do is High Power Rocketry.
One of the things that we have to do as part of classwork is a senior level design course, where we pick a project and research and build it. We can also choose to do vehicle design team projects, basically design and build vehicles for a competition. I am trying to do the later with a high power, custom build rocket (being a senior Aerospace Engineer major).
The challenge now resides in finding a competition to do such a thing. I have found two that are applicable, the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (https://soundingrocket.org/competitions.aspx), and the NASA University Student Launch initiative (https://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/descriptions/University_Student_Launch_Initiative.html).
As USLI is almost entirely purchased commercial motors and rockets, I find it lacking on the more difficult side of rocket design, the motor, thus im leaning towards the IREC. However, it is in Ut. From Buffalo to UT with a rocket in tow is non trivial a drive.
Basically my question, is there any high level/power rocket competitions with custom designed motors being allowed that would be on the level along the lines of these competitions?
Thanks,
Dan

Not sure if I'd consider this on par with USLI, but it has had great success over past several years here in Florida.

The New York Space Grant site is here- https://astrosun2.astro.cornell.edu/specialprograms/spacegrant//index.html
But their focus appears to be on internships, research opportunities and such. Perhaps you could
contact one of the Profs at an affiliate school to organize something modeled after the Florida
Hybrid Competition...

Good Luck!
