Clearly my favorite rocket of all time is the old Estes Super Vega. I also own and have flown the Q-Modeling Vega with springs in the landing pods, now retired. I must also admit I spent way too much time and money years ago on a high power scratch Vega that sheared all the fins off just before apogee also, but it was still fun. So hopefully with some hindsight and wisdom I plan to make a real super Super-Vega that will look good, have the spring landing pods and will be built to last flight after flight.
I ordered and received the kit from Bad Boy Rocketry and everything arrived in perfect condition. This has plywood ttw main fins and ply centering rings.
I've started with filling the ply ttw fins with wood putty and keeping them flat using my dad's old heavy railroad tie we used for years to crush aluminum cans.
I sourced landing pod springs from Tacoma Screw earlier this week.
I plan to double up the tube thickness on the main body tube and the landing pods while keeping in mind the added weight.
I'll surely be looking for some advice here and there so I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. I plan to fly it on E motors, nothing more powerful than an E-20.

Making some progress this weekend, but earlier last week I thought I would browse Estes products to use my 15% off birthday coupon. Turns out there was an even better coupon that gave 30% off everything and free shipping at $100 so I grabbed the new bulk pack of 8 F15-4's, a pack of E12's and some starters as well as a pack of engine hooks. Now that I have the newer style E engine hook I can work on the motor mount.
I made a bunch of measurements for fin placement and cut my ttw slots and marked the lines for the fins in between the mains. I also did another filling and sanding on all fins especially at the edges. More pics to come.

Moving slowly but making progress. Cut the fin slots now and after sanding did another thin layer of wood filler on all the fins and more sanding since this photo. I used the wrap for the fin slots but it didn't seem to overlap perfectly so to be sure, I grabbed a soft tape measure and wrapped it around the tube to get the center to center distance in centimeters and get the slots just right.
