What did you do rocket wise today?

The one can of primer I applied two days ago is now mostly dust in the vacuum cleaner. Lather, Rinse, Repeat!

Primed my 3" MD rocket for AIRFest 19 today. I'll spray color and clear in the next few days.

Put the finishing touches on my 3" Blackstar and posted them up here:

Stickershock holographic looks good on an otherwise naked rocket:

I've been moving all my cases over to plano/husky/sewing plastic cases. Liked the ones I got for my 29/40-120 and 29/120 cases, today I decided to put my SU in them too. :)

Had a chat with Borky on the phone!

Krusty

Awwww man I had to do husband stuff before I could post about the phone chat. Darn fun. Just amazing how we can converse being 10 hours apart and it worked so well till my battery died.

Was great to hear from ya man.

Ummm dude dude dude tell us a bit about yourself or something.

Assembled the drill press and cut 9 centering rings for the Starship Vega landing pods.
For those of you out there who have never done it, it really hurts a lot when you stick your finger into the path of a fly cutter / circle cutter at 750rpm. Thankfully it hit the cuticle area of my finger and the finger folded out of the way. There was a little blood and a few adult words, but a paper towel around the finger and I completed the task.
I spent about $75 (and hurt myself) for maybe $5 worth of rings. Why to I always do it the hard way??

Holy crap, man!! Thanks be that it didn't grab your fingers and suck them in :p When I use mine I use 2 clamps and never put my hands around the cutter when it's spinning. I swear I have never seen a possibly more dangerous tool ever. Even the black finish works against you, that's why mine has some yellow tape on the bar the cutter is affixed to, so my weak eyes can see it.

43 years old from Minnesota. During the day, I work in an Employee Benefits Department running the retirement plans for my employer. Many years ago in grade school and jr. high, I launched a couple rockets. The other week my wife found an advertisement for a local Tripoli launch. She suggested that my son and I should go. We did and had a great time. Little does she know that she may have created a monster and made herself a rocket widow.

Invite her along the next time. My wife now builds and flies rockets herself and is considering getting her Level 1 certification.

That is awesome. Mine will paint rockets, but does not care much about the launching.

Awesome. Pretty much the same, but I did a secret santa where the guy wanted rockets. The wife and I picked up a starter kit and I was hooked. After my first club launch I knew I had to go for the L1.

I am sure you are aware of it, but we love to assist with any questions you might have. Some things I wish I knew about when I got started would be: Nylon chutes with swivels, kevlar shock cords attached to the motor mount, and dog barf wadding.

100F in the garage, frustrated because the I should have spent the $ for a better drill press, etc etc. I shut it off and just reached in, it was still spinning. I caught the end of the bar. I agree it is a dangerous tool and that the bar needs some color at the ends.
I think I'll throw the tool away and get more hole saws. I will keep my fingers longer that way.

Walking out of the office I saw a lizard on the sidewalk and I said "Hi, squirrel to it." I was halfway to the car before I realized my mistake. I felt embarrassed even though the lizard was the only one that heard me and he didn't seem offended.

Wait ... that's not rocketry related. Nevermind.

I got the 2 sets that Harbor Freight has, they were just *slightly* off. I took my die grinder and chucking the hole saws in the drill press I ground off the set of the teeth. The set is the wavyness of a saw tooth, it makes the cut wider so there's less drag on a sawblade so all that's left of the tooth is the same thickness as the upper part of the blade. Makes them nearly useless for cutting thick wood but we don't have to worry about that with the woods we use in rocketry.

I actually have a Delta drill press thats got to be over 50 years old. I bought one of those cheap Harbor Freight drill presses so I wouldn't have to change tools so often...it cut a triangular hole :p I sold it for what I paid for it, got it on a massive sale so it wasn't hard to sell. I even warned the guy about the hole being delta-shaped but he didn't care. It would drill steel just fine, it was wood I had the problem with. I still have the Delta, it will probibly be in my estate :p

Being that it is raining; not a lot.

I did make some money to buy rocket stuff with. Does that count?

Ground tested my Binder Stealth and Polecat Thumper. First one was right on, Thumper not so much--going to bump up and redo.

Built a cold air baffle and installed it in a 4" rocket I bought from SDbolts at ROCstock last month.
I removed the epoxy anchor point inside the body tube and removed the elastic shock cord. Smoothed it out and built a cold air baffle out of a 6" LOC coupler. At the bottom of the coupler I glued a 1/4" centering ring with a short piece of 54mm MMT through it. Flared the bottom end so it would slip over the existing MMT and extended it up into the coupler 5". At the top of the coupler I put a fiberglass bulkplate with a forged eyebolt through it. I also drilled six 18mm holes around the outside edge. Inserted six 18mm tubes 5" long down into the coupler. Ejection gas enters the coupler through the short piece of 54mm MMT and hits the bottom of the bulkplate, then reverses directions back down and exits through the 18mm tubes. Eliminates the need for a nomex pad or dog barf, you can pack the chute right on top of it. The eye bolt holds the bottom of a 15 ft. piece of 1/2" nylon that is attached to the existing eyebolt at the top.
I also glued on a 54mm Aeropac retainer at the bottom of the MMT.
After the upgrades I weighed it and compared it to the weight it was when I bought it and it lost 6 oz. by replacing the braided elastic shock cord with 1/2" tubular nylon.
Plan to fly it on a 1 grain CTI I-218 White Thunder at our first fall launch in September.

Finally finished my rockets for NYPOWER.

Added nose weight to Excalibur
Put decals on 3FNC & Orion
Repaired Gnasher

Here is the fleet I am bringing. Many of these are "virgins" and will have their maiden flight. We will see how these wreak havoc upon the masses and lay waste to Geneseo :y:

Holy jeepers man. That is quite the mix. Let someone else launch at NYPOWER ;)

It is folks like you... man folks like you.. Just thanks. For someone to even want to make one of those, let alone build them. High fricking five man. high fricking five.

I had fun rocket wise, but flickr is down for 6 hours of maintenance and I like to upload pics that way. Will post tomorrow.

I tip my hat to you sir

I always bring along more rockets than ever get shot off.

Yours all look amazing BTW

I hope all goes great for ya
