Here in California, wet winter is our rocket-flying season, because the fire danger is in the dry summer and fall. Unfortunately, that can also mean rained-out launches. It’s not cold right now, but next weekend’s launch has been canceled due to a rainy forecast.
Where do you go for launches?
I fly with 2 clubs.
LUNAR flies its high power launches at a site called Snow Ranch, east of Stockton, near a small town called Farmington. Those launches are most subject to weather, because the Ranch is vulnerable to fire danger during dry months. But it also can get closed down for rain. This site is only about 1.5 hr drive, so this is the site I prefer.
TCC flies at a Central Valley site west of Fresno, east of Coalinga. That site is an irrigated property, and has less fire danger, so launches are scheduled for the whole year, including the summer months. But if it rains at all near the date of the launch, the soil turns to adobe mud, and the launch is canceled. This site is 2.5 hr away, so
I usually only go here about twice a year for their multi-day launches.
Interesting - I fly at ROC mostly, although the rain has cancelled launches since October. I've flown at TCC once, too, last year when the hosted LDRS - nice field. I was just curious since you said your launch for next weekend was cancelled if you were talking about TCC.
