I've been using 1/8" and 1/4" birch plywood from Michael's for some time now. Great price with the 40% coupons. Sometimes I have to pick through a little bit, but have generally found pretty flat stock. They also sell balsa and basswood. I was buying it at Woodcraft, but their prices are pretty high and sometimes the quality isn't that great. I do buy their 5/32" Finnish birch plywood sometimes. I wish I could find a source for 3/16" plywood, but haven't been able to.

Any of the old hollow core doors people throw out can be easily cut up to salvage the 1/8" plywood.

Good old Amazon.com usually has astoundingly good deals on such material.

If you live near Ann Arbor, there is Nankin Hobby, they have lots of Balsa.
They have 3 locations, the closest one to Ann Arbor is in Ypsilanti.
