The first day (Friday) of this launch started off with low cloud cover, so I flew mid-power and low power rockets to start, while Sharon worked in her mobile office. My first flight was an Estes Argent modified for dual deploy, flying on a G80 to 1735 ft. I lost sight of it in the bottom of a cloud, but several others watched the entire flight from a different angle. Then I flew my Viper 3 on 3x E12's, which was easily visible under the clouds. Since the clouds were still pretty low, my next flight was the Argent again on a G76 green to 1382 ft.
When the clouds started breaking up, Sharon (Hardline) got in the act with her Mad Cow rocket called "Another Juan". It flew on a CTI I285 to 3127 ft. I followed up with my Blackstar Jr. on a CTI I255 Red Lightning to 4287 ft. Scattered clouds brought out the big guns, so Sharon flew her 4" Cuddle Monster" on a research L1243 "Not your wimpy red" (NYWR) load in a 76/3600 casing. It flew to 13,188 ft. My first 76 was "Slick Willy" on an L926 "Don Alexanders Slow white" (DAW), also in a 76/3600 casing. It went to 12,441 ft. We finished up with my "Big Bad Dog", another Wildman 4" rocket flying on an M1306 DAW in a 76/6000 casing to 17,885 ft. All of our big rockets are recovered as a team, usually on foot, because you can't drive off road on the grasslands. I walked over six miles on the first day of launching!
After an overnight storm, we started out Saturday with really nice conditions. Light winds and moist grass, and the waiver opened at 8 am. Sharon flew first with her 4" "Big Bad Juan" on a research K697 NYWR 54/1600 motor. It flew to 3782 ft. with an easy recovery. My first rocket was a Mad Cow "Avalanche" on a research K611 DAW to 6204 ft. With another easy recovery, Sharon loaded up her DX3 with a research M1561 DAW in a 76/6000 casing and flew it to 16,425 ft. It landed almost a mile away and took us over an hour to recover. I loaded up my 3" Blackstar and flew it on a research L1425 NYWR in a 54/2550 casing to 11,035 ft. We broke for lunch and discussed what we wanted to do, with both of us pretty beat. We decided we had one more flight left in us, so we picked the biggest rocket/motor we had, my Red-tailed Extreme. It weighs 16 lbs. dry and had an M2115 NYWR 76/6000 motor in it. Flew it to 15,453 ft. and landed in the middle of nowhere. Another long walk with a heavy rocket through tall grass with short prickly pear cactus growing in it. To frost that cake, a small thunderstorm showed up to pepper us with rain and 25 to 30 mph winds, a headwind to boot.
After that adventure, we decided to pack up camp, get a good nights sleep and head back to Red River, NM. Two big three day launches in two weekends in a row was a bit much.
