After reading G.Harry Stine's book "Handbook of model rocketry" page 181 (Streamer Recovery) I have been left wondering what is the calculation to work out the length of the streamer. It quote the 10:1 ratio but not how to calculate the length.

In the book it quotes

"Research done by Trip Barber and others at the MIT Rocket Society indicates there is an optimum streamer size for every model rocket"

but it does not state what the calculations are. How does one work out the optimum size for a rocket you are building?

Is it possible to have too much shock cord? If it is, I think I know why I lost two fins on my Estes Goblin this past weekend.
