Finally decided to go with a relay launch system. The schematic and instructions can be found here.
I made a few changes, in that I didn't use the 2nd buzzer and added a 2nd continuity test button at the pad.
 
The controller on the tripod. Most of the parts can be had by your local Radio Shack.
Rather than a pull out plug, I went with a small toggle switch. Not as easy to lose. ;)
 
A standard telephone jack was used that accomidates 6 wires. I went with 5, so I could add the extra line for the 2nd continuity switch at the pad.
 
The launcher has 3 relays and a 30 amp fuse holder. The battery connections are bent from .125 copper bar.
