Another new motor I was able to fly at the just concluded NSL was the Quest D22 motor.

These 24mm x 70mm White Lightning propellant motors have more total impulse yet have less mass than a black powder D12 motor and sell for the same SRP.

I used my Quest Big Dog kit with a 24/29 motor adapter for a flight test.

The Big Dog 'howled' off the launch pad and into the air. The white smoke and brilliant flame of the motor was easily seen.
The parachute ejected after apogee but that was my mistake for using a -7 delay instead of a -4.
The model floated down to a landing yet STILL broke a fin off upon touch-down.

I really like these D22 motors. Here's hoping Quest will offer them in a bulk-pack as I can see myself flying more D22s than D12s in the future.

I was comparing motors on buyrocketmotors.com for my Spacemonkey V2 (300g).

MotorTotal ThrustMax ThrustCost per motor
D2219 Ns27N
$5.40
E2036 Ns35N
$12.15
E3033 Ns48N
$12.15

The rocket lawndarted on a D21-4W. The E20 worked well and will try the E30 during the next low wind day. It also worked well with a D12-3 (33N Max Thrust). Considering the price difference, the D22 will also be interesting to try but concerned about the MT getting the heavy rocket off the rod.

Anyone have any better ideas for keeping the initiator in the motor nozzle? Those rubber tubes suck.

Thanks for the nice review, Bob. I wonder if your Big Dog stubbed its toe on one of the many rocks scattered throughout the launch site.

There were sure a lot of rockets at the NSL flying site.

Not only did the entire fin get torn off but it took some of the outer paper layer of the body tube with it.

Do you know anybody at Quest I can talk to about this issue? ;)
