Nose Cone Payload Bay: Now in 24mm

I previously posted about an 18mm (BT-20) payload pay that goes into the nose cone. I shared my design using the Estes Bull Pup 12D nose cone.

It came out really nicely...and clean. But because it used an Estes 18mm retainer and BT-20 tubing, it wasn't as large as I would have liked. I started brainstorming ideas on developing a 24mm (BT-50) payload bay for plastic nose cones, but that didn't use a metal engine retainer and would still be clean and neat enough for my "OCD."

Here's what I came up with:

The pictures should be self-explanatory. I know it's a little rough, but that's because this is a prototype and I used the old BT-55 nose cone payload bay from my Bull Pup. This meant I had to rip out the old components which damaged the nose cone (I repaired it the best I could).

In case you're wondering, that "lid" on the payload bay that you'll attach to the shock cord is a BT-20 plastic nose cone "cap" that you can get in an Estes Viking, Yankee or Wizard kit.

As you can see, it still uses the Estes 18mm engine retainer. The trick is that you reverse the 18mm retainer components. Instead of the female part going on the outside or end of the tubing, it goes on the inside. Then the male component becomes the lid of the payload bay. Because of this, you don't get a pure 24mm payload bay, but it's still give you more room than a BT-20 tubing-based payload bay. It can also do this:

Update: Here's a second version of the 24mm payload bay. A bit cleaner, although not quite as elegant looking given the attachment point oddity of the Patriot's nose cone.

Thanks for triggering me to think further into that direction!
I often thought of bringing the altimeter to a secure place, even though the rocket has no dedicated payload section. Your design and related parts seem to be a solution.
Will try to source parts and get access to 3D printing - put on my „explore agenda“ for 2024 😀.

Did you add venting holes into the nose cone?
