This modified bull pup went up on an E-30!!! It went straight up into the clouds and never saw it again. Lots of strong thermals that day so probably drifted to far away to see it.

Unless you either want to waste a rocket, don't have anything better to do, or just want to see it, I suggest not to use anything bigger than the recommened motor size.

The original kit was actually from the Estes company. I'm going to try the clear tube idea. (that's a great idea by the way)

Vastly overpowering rockets can be a lot of fun :D

You just have to have the right conditions to get them back...

I send up estes rockets on E and F motors all the time without any trouble, but it does have to be pretty calm, or else they can be easy to lose.

What motor was the bullpup flying on in that pic?

Bull.

That pic looks exactly like a standard black powder motor in the B-C range. E30's would not have as much smoke or flame, and would be near impossible to catch in that perfect of a lift off shot.

For comparison, here is an F39, a motor almost identical to the E30, with the same propellant type, but slightly larger: https://www.tripolimontana.org/demery/Images/Arreaux4.jpg

Note the lack of a flame, and the thin haze. These are characteristic of the smaller blue thunder motors. Your shot shows neither of these characteristics.

On the other hand, here is an estes C6. Note the thin, moderate length orange flame and moderate grey smoke, EXACTLY as can be seen in your picture above: https://www.geocities.com/rocketguy_101/images/SandhawkFly.jpg

You sure 'bout that? I don't have an E-30 flight card (for any rocket)
in the pile from this month...

Mine on a C6-5

Here's a link to the larger version....

We were REALLY lucky to get that picture with such detail.

Kinda gotta go with cjl on this one. I launch a Q-modeling Stilletto on an E30-4T a couple of weeks ago and I almost missed watching the liftoff! Forget getting a picture of it, it left the pad like a scalded dog!

For the estes bullpup to receive an E30 (same dimensions as an Estes 24mm) I don't think the boattail would have anything left on it. I'm just guessing but wouldn't it need a lot of additional nose weight as well? To fly on the standard motors the kit needs/came with two(?) pieces of clay, for an E30 it would probably need a whole play-dough can!!

Anyhow, cool launch pic. Hey CQB, that really is a slick pic. BTW, nice green grass, chicken fertilizer?

CJL - nice sandhawk pic! Your rocket? Where can we ge us one of them?

Tom & Mags!!:D

I think Dan meant D21. Here's a video of an earlier flight of Dan's Bull Pup and you can hear Robb announcing that the flight is using a D21:

The rocket really pops off the pad. I only caught the still image because my camera can take five or six frames a second for a few seconds. Taking a lot of pictures (and being lucky) is what it takes to catch a good picture of a small rocket on a big motor. :)

I don't think *that* pic is on a D21, though. None of the D21s I've flown (or seen) have had that much smoke or flame. Not to mention that unless the MMT is REALLY recessed in the Bullpup, we'd see a nozzle sticking out.

Well, it's definitely a later flight. I can't take video and stills at the same time. :)

Not mine, unfortunately. Just the first pic I could find online of a C6 :)

Note in the picture, the forward canards are missing. That would put the CP much closer to the top of the main fins (no I have not rocksimed it, I'm guessing based on experience. I do have a 18mm BP in my fleet). Also, the boatail would be shortened, thus moving the motor mount forward and shifting the CG froward. So we have pushed back our CP and moved our CG foward. That is a winning combination.

The E-30 is only about 20 grams (0.7 ounces) heavier than a C6.

FFT: Should we be allowed to call our rocket a Bull Pup if we leave off the forward carnards? To me, with out the canards, it's just a regular rocket.

If you change the color or alter the design of a scale missile, then it is no longer scale and IMO, should not be called by the scale missiles' name...

*note I am replying to skip_dye's reply, as rocketman101 made it into my killfile last night. *

Not to get on your nerves, but are you sure that it's not an E9? Based on the flame characteristics, it looks like an everyday BP motor.

It was a D-21,
because I was looking through my flight box and find the burnt out engine. Did you open that video?
