3D Printing 2X Mars Lander

Came across a 2x Mars Lander on Thingiverse and the printer I use is a Lulzbot TAZ 6 with HIPS filament (I love the stuff) and I noticed I can print all pieces except for the Ascent Stage (piece is too tall for the printer). I've seen where people will slice large nose cones and stuff and create a little lip for the parts to join together but I have no clue how they do that.
