    Found Fins

A donor brought a box of rocketry stuff to one of our club's launches. I found these fins: Very Space age. Any idea what they're from? If the kit is in Rocksim or OR I can steal the fins and start coming up with designs...

    Level 1 Rockets

I got my Level 1 last summer, flying an Estes Leviathan on an H115 DM. While I enjoy flying it, it's really more a midpower bird. I'm thinking I should build a real Level 1 rocket and fly it on Hs and Is. I was looking at the LOC IV, which looks very straightforward, but I saw the 4" V2 and...

    Streamer Sizing

I'm trying to design a LPR rocket, and I want to use a streamer for recovery, as it may go quite high. What is a good descent speed under a streamer? I've picked some common sizes and materials in OR, and I was surprised at how high some of the speeds were.

Check out my new yard sale rockets!

I picked these up at a yard sale this weekend: I thought my wife’s eyes were going to roll out of her head...

BMS T-300 tubing and Couplers for Estes Leviathan

I am thinking of building a payload bay for my Estes Leviathan. Balsa Machining Service has T-300 tubing and couplers. It looks to be the same as the Leviathan tubing, 3.00x2.93x.035. Correct? Anyone else tried it?

Mix and Match Estes PSII Rockets

I was messing around with my Estes Sahara in OR, simming different motors. I believe the Sahara is the top of an Argent, middle portion of a ventris, and fin can from a Partizon. It's a bit too short for G motors, so I wodered if I could stretch it. So I was idling wondering what would happen...

    Aerotech HV Arcas Questions

I picked up an older Aerotech HV Arcas kit secondhand from someone getting out of the hobby. I am planning on replacing the large engine hook with an Aerotech retainer, but other than that, any build advice? I have to say I was surprised that the instructions recommend medium CA as the...

    BT70 Gemini Titan

I have 34" of BMS BT70 tubing I picked up on sale at the LHS. I also got fiber dual mount 24mm centering rings for BT70. I'm thinking of building a Gemini Titan scratch build, loosely based on the old Estes kit. So far I've found two nose cones, a Balsa one from BMS and a 3D printed one off...

Turning Nose Cone without a Lathe?

I need a pointed nose cone for a design I would like to build. I can't find one the right size, or close, but I did find a balsa ogive cone. I bought it, and I'm wondering if I can glue a dowel in the base, chuck it in a drill, and sand it/file it down. Will this work? Anyone done it? Or am...

    Level 1 with Leviathan

Ok, some guys in the club are encouraging bad behavior. They are telling me I should go for my L1 this coming summer, using my Estes Leviathan. I built my Leviathan mostly stock, but I made a few changes: Left out the motor block Yellow wood glue for wood parts, internal fillets on fins and...

    Papering already installed fins

One of my favorite rockets is the Semroc Vega, which I have flown more than any other rocket. I have managed to break every fin, some more than once, in the same spot: Is it possible to paper an already installed fin? I'm thinking of sanding off the paint, and gluing paper reinforcements...

Open Rocket Linux Problem--"Invalid Desktop Entry File"

My brother gave me a Chromebook computer, which is very nice. If I want to run certain programs, such as JMRI, Arduino IDE, or Openrocket, though, I need to use Linux. My brother set it up for me, with CROSH and LXDE on the laptop, and I used sudo apt-get install openrocket. It automatically...

    SPEV MK. 1

My daughter and I are putting together a rocket from a box of parts that someone gave us, plus a few odds and ends I have around here. My questions have to do with the motor mount. I can either use a heavier motor tube for D size motors, or I can cut a piece of BT-50 and use that for E...

    Delay Questions

Generally speaking, is it better for a motor delay to be too long or too short? I've been using Open Rocket to sim some rockets with a variety of motors. Often times OR will call for an optimum delay that is "in between" what my choices are. For instance, I simmed a rocket with an Aerotech...

    Iris Rocket

I scratch built this rocket to use up some spare parts I had laying around. I had a leftover piece of BT-20, lots of scrap balsa from kits for fins, a spare nose cone. I cut the engine block from a spent motor casing. Streamer is some orange warning tape I found. It turned out fairly...

    Leviathan on an E30-4 Motor?

Has anyone ever flown an Estes Leviathan on an Aerotech E30-4? The club my daughter and I fly with has an "E" motor limit, and my daughter and I want to fly our Leviathans. I simmed it in OR, and it looks like it will work to about 390 ft, but am I pushing my luck, or will it be a safe if...

    Skylark Sounding Rocket

It's too cold to paint here, so I've kept busy with builds. Somehow I learned about the Skylark sounding rocket, and Adrian was kind enough to send me some scale information. Here's the single stage version, but I'm working on a booster: I papered the fins using a glue stick, and the glue...

    BNC80BB Design

My LHS had some balsa nosecones in the clearance box, so I bought a bunch of them. One was a very large, round BNC80BB: Maybe it's backwards, but I tried to design a rocket around this nosecone (and other scrap pieces I have laying around), so I came up with this large, draggy, Big...

    BT-55 Tube

Ok, I have a few questions about body tubes. My LHS sells white tubes that look like this: I've been using Open Rocket to design some rockets, but I'm not sure what kind of tube this is. I looked up similar tubes on Apogee's website, and they sell Kraft Paper. OR lets me choose Kraft...

    Vanguard TV-0

Following up on my Viking 7, I built Viking 13, better known as Vanguard TV-0, from this thread: It scales out as about 1:33 scale with a BT-55 body tube. The reentry pods are scrap balsa sanded to shape and glued on. I flew it on Sunday and it flies really well. I believe I launched...
