Wow, that is bad. It will kill this forum. Oh well. I knew the new TOS would be death of it.

That's the truth. I will bail if the ad content get's ridiculous. I mean seriously, why would I post a photo if they are going to use it as an ad?

I'm not sure which is worse; that TRF is inserting ads into forum content, or that they determined that toilet paper was an appropriate ad to put on a picture of my rocket.

I think the ads are very unprofessional. We take time with these rockets and then they add a tag line of an ad . That's mindless . That's what I have to say take it or go to the next post .

when we think about it, your finish is very smooth

It really is quite strange, isn't it? Toilet paper, at least without an accompanying borax ad, would seam like an odd fit for rocketry.

The ads added to the bottom of the picture is unprofessional and mindless . Now the banners is a different story there useful . That's what I have to say .if you don't like it go to the next post

There are indeed irrelevant / obtrusive ads over user content.

Site owner is okay displaying toiler paper over rockets, so he does not give a s$%t about rockets and community. Sad. This will not last long.

It appears that they have started embedding lots of Vibrant Media advertising on TRF. Like turning your text into hyperlinks for advertisements and overlaying images with their ads. Like for example the pics that I just posted on the MPR forum yesterday now have toilet paper ads on them.

Nathan your 29mm MD model is beautifully finished. I really admire the finish you have on that one. I need to revisit that thread and read through the details. Reminds me of the LOC Legacy but the sleek sweep on your fin design looks great.

Shame about the ads. Yesterday toilet paper ads ..... Today Lowe's ads for Kobalt tools. Who knows what tomorrow may bring .....

.

I logged out and checked this out for myself:

My photo's that were hosted on Photobucket are untouched. No ads.
Some that were either hosted here or on other hosting sites do have ads, but not all.

I dunno.....I'm on the fence on this subject. If it generates income for TRF, I'm happy about that (server space does cost money), but I can see why some people are getting annoyed about Toilet Paper ads or Septic Tank servicing being placed on their pictures. Leaves them with a crappy feeling (pardon the pun).

I'm not sure what the happy medium will be, if there is one.

WELL, your pic. got papered

I just tried something again. I logged out and went to the low power forum. In that forum on page 1 currently, is a thread on the Semroc Snake Jumper. And down near the middle of the page there is a BIG picture of the Snake Jumper. I placed my cursor near the bottom of the picture and up popped an ad for American Express. I logged in and it would not appear.

Yeah, I get that too, if I'm logged out AND if I turn off my ad block extensions.

Great way to drive away potential new users.

Free forums are great - but it sucks for the guy who has to pay hosting/bandwidth and decide who moderates etc.

On the other end of the spectrum I canceled my XM/Sirius radio subscription the instant they started putting ads on air. If I want ads in-between songs I can listen to free stations.

Speaking for myself, I think the banner ads were very affordable, and I would have been willing to pay more, if it would have prevented him selling TRF. (or whatever transpired). I don't recall any discussion prior to the transfer of ownership.

But so far I have seen no funky ads. The first ad I see in an image, or that annoying underlined text that pops something up.....will give me a real sick feeling. Hope its a Pepto ad.

109 posts and no sign of the new management - customer service issues as well?

My 2 bits:
1) Separate behavior for not being logged in and being logged in sucks. I don't stay logged into any website, and unless I have a need, I read TRF without logging in. Nuisance behavior, like ads that pop atop the pictures and in underlined words, can make it undesirable to even want to log in, especially if the default experience of this site is to present itself like an infection of adware.

2a) If they want to use the pictures to draw attention to ads, they should do so by consuming real estate below the picture, instead of over the picture. It's their page, so they should be able to format it so that there is room for the picture and the ad.

2b) I don't give a rat's ass if they might have the logic that I could close the ad to see the picture. I don't want to spend my time wiping their crap - a Charmin pun on purpose - off of the information that I want to share and have shared with me. This site is used largely to share information, and putting ads atop that information interferes with a primary purpose of this site.

So, how's that YORF site looking?

Everyone in this thread could logoff tomorrow and they'd barely even see a slack in ad revenue. I'd be shocked if they cared.

Honestly, I doubt they care what we say. They are not here to service the community, they are not here to provide a forum for rocketry, they are not here to let you have a good time. They are here to make money, period, end of story. I believe they are betting that adding advertisements will drive away some users, but the apathetic vast majority will stay, and guess what...they are probably right. Talk is cheap, you want to see a difference, go do something about it; call the owners, email, LOIC, whatever. One or two angry people posting and then leaving the forum does nothing to affect their bottom line, you need a significant portion of the non-vocal, non-posting community to leave before it starts to become actually noticeable. Personally, I don't mind the ads this is the internet in 2013 after all, and we are not paying for this privilege Our personal information is the money stream, our viewing advertisements is what makes the site run after all. I imagine they have more than dealt with an uppity membership before, I can only imagine this is a scene that has been repeated many times before, and we have to remember what we are, nothing more than sheep to cull.

Upside- If we start a new forum, we won't have to listen to people droning on and on about using the search before posting a question!

This reminds me of when the Chicago Cubs were sold by the Tribune Co. and the new owners started putting up new advertising. Lots of people got bent out of shape, but in the end nothing changed...the Cubs are as mediocre as ever (sorry, I'm a White Sox fan and I couldn't resist :) ).

So there are (more) ads on TRF brought in by the new management. A little perspective, folks...it's not like when the Germans invaded Austria!
And at the end of the day, if you ever feel like TRF is taking more out of you than it's giving you, you can walk. I'm pretty sure there's no secret police force to stop you.

I'm sure they don't care - the lack of involvement in the two threads running regarding the new changes is evidence of that. It's too bad.

Be honest....when the news first broke, did you expect any less?

If every single user stopped posting, there's enough in the archives to guarantee profit for years to come.

We either deal with the suck, or someone ponies up for a new site. Won't be me.

Some that were either hosted here or on other hosting sites do have ads, but not all.
I also tried logging out, disabling Adblock and looking around. My photos which are hosted here, and any other photos I found as attachments here, appeared clean. Many photos on Photobucket have been splatted with ads.

Additionally, several phrases in posts have Infolink links superimposed on them.

Adblock is now enabled again. :)

Well I have made a rocket out of toilet rolls, with appropriate streamer, called 'Carry On at your Convenience'.
You probably have to be British to get the reference. The films didn't travel well.
