It was warm at the SARG launch yesterday, but it ended up being a very nice day. A light breeze kept the temperature tolerable. We had our very first onsite vendor, Bay Area Rocketry. It was exciting having them there. I ended up spending money I didn't know I had. LOL

I hope they come back again, it was so convenient being able to buy reloads there. They're great people, they've also been at the last two Snow Ranch launches.

I ended up launching three of mine, all first flights. First up was Plasma Fart on an H73 Black Jack reload, drilled to 6 seconds. It was a perfect flight, arrow straight to about 1000 ft. Unfortunately, I had a major brain fade with the camera, and turned off the video right as the motor started to light. I'm getting old. But my son Joe got some awesome flight photos. I love the one of it trailing smoke as it's swinging under the chute. You can see that in the second video, too. It landed about 100 yds from the pad.

Next up was my Unguided Mayhem. I was going to launch it on a 29mm H220, but picked up an I218 Redline from Bay Area Rocketry. It was a good choice. An awesome flight to about 1500 ft. I drilled the delay to 8 seconds. Love that red flame! I did get video of the flight this time, and Joe got some more great photos.

Last of mine was my Centurion XL, a Semroc Centurion upscale. I was going to launch it on a G53, but Joe talked me into a G64 White Lightning instead. It was a great flight to about 1300 ft. I drilled the delay to 6 seconds. The G64 was louder than I remember. I wish the sound in the video was better.

The last of what I got was Kit's Big Pink. I don't know what motor he used, but it was a great flight. Joe took the photos.

Great looking launches Jim,the paint really stood out on your rockets.

Actually, that was my "Steppin' Razor II" on an H180W with the delay drilled out to 6 seconds. Great boost! From your video, it looks like I hit it just right and made the most timely deployment of my rocketry career thus far. For a while it looked like the rocket was going to land pretty close to my seated/videography position but the building thermal broke loose and the wind kicked up. Contrary to the close in appearance of your super zoom cam, the rocket landed over the ridge, across the dry creek, and on the further slope. Pretty fair walk for the last flight of the day...maybe a bit more than half a mile there and back.

I managed to grab some video of the flight as well but my zoom and camera for that matter pale in comparison to yours. I only managed to get two rockets up due to the morning congestion at the pads. There were a LOT of young rocketeers yesterday.

Your Unguided Mayhem flight was outstanding. Two feet of red flame make your rocket look small and it's anything but. Looking forward to next month's launch (fingers crossed) so I can pop one of those I218R's myself.

As to the temperature on the field, I'd disagree about it being comfortable. My Harbor Freight digital scale stopped working after I left it out on the work table exposed to the sun. It worked later at home once it cooled down. A few of our members looked borderline heat prostrated at times during and after the activities. We helped Bay Area Rocketry take down their EZ-Ups and such. I could have easily knocked back another bottle of G2 but only brought two on ice. Didn't even stop at Hobby Town, Hobby Lobby, or Sportsman's Warehouse on the way home. What a bunch of lightweight geezers we are!

Well, I was mostly right. It is big and it is pink! You're going to have to make me a cheat sheet with the names of your rockets. I can never remember them.

Wasn't it great to see Bay Area Rocketry there? I'm still happy about it! It's like we're a real club now or something. LOL

Thus speaks the Delay Master!

I've overcome my fear of drilling out delays according to Thrustcurve.org recommendations after seeing Jim's many deploys at apogee.

Go with what works, right?

Yeah, I'd have to say Thrustcurve is usually dead on. They haven't let me down yet.

Outstanding report and great flights!! I love the photos!

Are you drilling delays with the Aerotech tool, or with a drill bit and a rule of thumb?

Here are a few snaps of my limited launch activities:

Picture #1 is my Super-Duper Neon 29 prepped and ready for SCO review. Note Aeropack retainer restraining G53 in 29/40-120 case. Okay to install igniter on mid-power rocket before mounting on pad.

Picture #2 is the same rocket finally on the pad after waiting through the line of young rocketeers. I helped the young lady next to the SDN29 get her rocket on the pad and she returned the favor by retrieving my rocket..."It was just laying there near mine"...Bonus!

Picture #3 is Steppin Razor II sitting on the pad. This one is easy to recognize as it has no black trim. This is my beater rocket that I am constantly revising and experimenting on. Goes pretty well for a mailing tube rocket. Igniter not installed on this bad boy until the rocket was on the pad and vertical. And yes, that's the motor mount, 29-38mm adapter, and reload case sticking out the bottom of the rocket a few inches. Tube fin rockets have their CP down inside the fin can and one caliber of stability means there can be some weight in the aft end. See Larry Brand's tube fin research articles in "Sport Rocketry".

Looks like I missed a great launch with good weather... I was on the east coast at my nephew's BSA Eagle Court of Honor this weekend. Maybe we'll get a May launch this year.:)

Congratulations to your nephew! That's awesome!

Congrats to your nephew. I thought you might have been down at TCC for your L3 cert attempt. Maybe there will be a LUNAR launch in two weeks. You've got a milestone of your own to attempt and I've got some new reloads to burn. :D

It was an absolutely fabulous day for a launch. My boys and I had a great time!

Being a realtively new member I wanted to help out. I spent the time my boys waited in line at the check in table to learn the ropes of LCO and to assist the large number of young first-timer rocketeers get their rockets set up on the pads correctly. Hopefully I can volunteer more in the future to relieve Skip and others from their duties. Would love to see some of Skip's rockets go up next time.

Jim you had some great launches as usual. My boys will always ask on our drive to the field "Wonder what Captain Low and Slow will bring out today" :D

As for the heat ... the easy-up tent was a must and the light breeze did make it tolerable. However, I have realized that I have come to the age when a hat is now a necessity due to thinning hair and a now pink scalp.

I too was very pleased to see Bay Area Rocketry honor our club with their presence. I picked up more igniters and a couple reloads myself. Hope to see them again.

Looking forward to the next launch ... Snow Ranch? ... and hopefully a May launch for SARG.

During the after launch clean up activities, I asked the folks from Bay Area Rocketry if they had done well enough over the course of the day to warrant a repeat visit. Sounded like they were in at least the break-even range and planned to attend our next launch. Yippee!

A couple of reasons for the middling sales figures:
1. A number of our HP fliers were absent on Saturday most likely due to the postponement to a rain date.
2. This was the first time we've had an onsite vendor so folks didn't plan accordingly, maybe buying from the LHS or online vendors.
3. Hot weather kept folks away.

I've made purchases from Bay Area Rocketry at the last three launches they attended. Each time their stock has increased and with the Grand Opening 20% discount and NO HAZMAT FEES(!), I plan to buy more. Saturday I picked up an I161W-M, an I218R-M, and a G53FJ-7. I should have also picked up another H180W-M as I burned my last one later in the day.

Volunteers are always welcome, especially early in the day when the Cub Scouts, 4-H, and other young rocketeers flood the check-in table.

There are a couple of things we need to work on for upcoming SARG launches:

  • 1. Our PA system works acceptably well but the microphone died Saturday morning. We need to repair or replace the mike.
  • 2. The young'uns overwhelmed our two banks of four low power pads. Our launch controller has a maximum capacity of three banks of four pads. This means that the mid power folks are competing for pad space among the young horde. Secondly we had only set up two HP pads (one rod, one rail) which also created a bit of logjam.
    • a. We need to set up at least three HP pads, preferrably four.
    • b. We need to increase our launch control capacity to accommodate a bank of mid power pads.
The last item (increasing launch control capacity) is going to be the biggie.

I agree it would be nice to have three LP/MP racks of four rods each and at least three HP launch rails/rods. Not sure about the issue in doing that however ... were you concerned from a cost stand point?

Also, the PA system could use a boost. I was impressed at the soundsystem at the LUNAR launch and would like to see something like that at SARG. Again, are we talking about a lot of $$$?

Couple of good issues to raise at the next meeting. I for one would be all for approviing such an expense provided our treasury can afford it.

You do get good whistles out of some of your rockets. Great flights!
