I'm old. Young people are not stupid, just inconsiderate. I'm not convinced that this flattening the curve strategy is the best, but I am doing my best to adhere to it.
There is no cure, specific treatment, or vaccine for COVID-19. Therefor, testing is largely a waste except for the statisticians, and for getting some people out of quarantine. The projections I've seen will still overwhelm our health treatment capability, and the delay will not be sufficient for a cure or vaccine to be administered to the public. I've read that 60-80% will get infected. An alternative strategy might be to get the virus as soon as possible, and recover before our health treatment system is overwhelmed. Perhaps 2% of the young people will die, but they have a better chance of surviving if they get infected when ventilators and hospital critical care beds are still available. Once they have recovered and stopped shedding the virus, they are "safe" and can even help care for others with the virus. Now young people partying like there is no tomorrow is bad, especially for the old folks.
However, we could persue a well managed "fattening of the curve", within our treatment capability. For example, we could take volunteers from 20-35 year old health care providers, offer them a free life insurance policy and free health care, as well as appropriate medical treatment and infect them with COVID-19. After they recover and free up medical resources, the pool of volunteers could be gradually expanded in a well managed way. This is not a serious proposal, just my musings. But one thing is certain: delaying the inevitable with a flattening the curve strategy is very injurious to the economy, and most individual incomes.
