A few days ago, I paited my nose cone(plastic) with several coats of Duplicolor filler primer. After that was sanded and smooth, I painted it with Rustoleum gloss enamel. A freind who always has beautiful rockets suggested that paint after I asked what he used. It turned out beautiful and glossy. Unfortunately, the stand I was using to hold the nosecone, fell over and it caused several bad blemishes. After the paint dried, I cleaned and sanded the damaged paint. I then painted the entire nosecone again and it was once again super smooth with a beautiful gloss. After about 5 minutes though, it began to turn into an awful wrinkle finish. I just don't understand...it was the same can I used for the first coat. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Take a look at the can for the recoat time. It's usually something like "within 30 minutes, or after 48 hours". If the paint has not fully cured, the solvents of the new coat will act like paint and varnish remover, and wrinkle the original coat.

Yes, I used denatured alchohol..But that was a day earlier and it was very dry and clean when I painted the second time. Could that have affected it?

Bill, I read the can (I should have right away!) and you are correct, repaint within 1 hour or after 48 Hours. I'm always learning. Oh well, now I'll wait 48, then sand again.

The only thing that I can think of is the two different types of paint and primer. When I get that same wrinkle finish the only constant is if my primer or paints that I use are not of the same brand. Even though sometimes it wrinkles and sometimes it doesn't.

Thobin, I agree. I'm gonna "Cure" the nose cone as it is now in my car, parked outside in the sun. I've done that in the past and the paint was super hard and immune to tapes etc. I'm going to wait at least three days before attempting another coat.
