Well, you know, maybe. But I now own 150 acres and will soon be closing on a 100 more. So then it will be a population density of 2 people to 250 acres. That does not seem like too much encroachment to me(?).

...have compound bow, will travel.

Thinking of the deer and where they cross the road, has anybody heard the audio of the lady calling the radio station angry at her local state DOT and where they put deer crossing signs. She thinks they should not allow deer to cross the roads so close to where people live and should put the deer crossing signs further out in the country so that the deer will cross the roads there. The woman's a genius. How many of you agree with her? I know my sister in-law does.:eyeroll:

There are a few things about that story I don't understand, and we get plenty of foxes and we get on well with them (don't feed them of course). For example, a 10lb fox making off with a 10lb. baby. It probably got in through a catflap; we don't have screen doors. The torn finger (not quite off) was because of the mother and the fox pulling in opposite directions.
London boroughs used to cull foxes; the last one stopped when they realised it was costing them £4000 a head in 1984 when that was probably not far off $10000.
Of course if you do that all you get is another fox moving in to the territory. I'd say that particular fox has got to go, though. it's obviously dangerous. Wouldn't be too hard to find. They're territorial.

If you have ever played "tug o war" with a 15lb dachshund it is easy to understand the power these little canids can have when determined. Foxes are beautiful little animals but then so are coyotes and they can be very dangerous to children, pets and live stock. I hate to shoot any animal but if push comes to shove the coyote is gonna lose, better them than one of my dogs or chickens.

I had a quite tasty burger at a friends BBQ in Colorado, it was venison. I had never had it before.

Used to have to go from North ATL to south ATL daily. Most of my driving was at dusk or dark in a MR-2. Hitting a deer was an occupational hazard. Everyday there was a new carcass on the road. I never hit one but had a couple close calls. As you can imagine, in a MR-2, It would have ended up in my lap. As far as coyotes are concerned--no big deal but they can be a nuisance. Fox and Bobcat are no problem either although here in TX they are pretty common(Bobcat) in the hoods--more a matter of the number of rabbits around than anything else---Although the local news would lead you to believe they are here to hunt us down!! I did have a falling out with a Bobcat a few years ago while turkey hunting, I was on the ground against a tree and calling some birds. I could hear turks all around the area. I turned slowly around the tree only to be face to face with a BIG BOB---seemed I called him in--He popped me in the face and ran off---sorta like--stupid redneck---no scratches but they have a hellova slap. I know a couple other guys who have had similar things happen. One thing about foxes---you guys who collect or hunt snakes will know this smell---If there is a fox in your area and has taken up residence, their spray has the same musky odor as a rat snake--sort of a burnt plastic smell--So if you have cats, keep them in at night!!!

Like the people who bought a house in a new development across the street from a dairy farm, then complained about the smell. the lady said (and i am not making this up), "Why don't they just buy milk at the grocery store like everybody else?" :eyeroll:

One year while I was in NJ we had a particularly bad winter with a high deer population. Estimates were that about 2/3 starved to death. Getting shot isn't fun, but I cannot imagine the misery of slowly starving to death in the cold. Pretty barbaric of the "hunting is evil" crowd to condemn animals to that.

I agree the folks that don't want other folks to hunt deer have no Idea what over population does to deer, the habitat, etc. Blue tongue and other diseases plus starvation is much more cruel in my book. Nebraska has been suffering from a statewide overpopulation problem for the last few years. We have one of the highest per capita car - deer collision rates in the country. Mother nature solved some of our over crowding last year with the drought. The low water levels allowed a mite to infect the deer when they went through the mud flats to drink. It caused a massive deer kill with reports of 30 to 50 carcases found in many areas. The deer would just go crazy. The anti hunters usually want the state to tranquilize the deer and ship them off to somewhere else. The trouble is nobody wants them.

My parents have almost hit deer coming back from a lesson at my coaches house. Luckily, we stopped short and it bounced away.

We have never hit any animals other than rabbits. And the only rabbits we have hit were on the highway.

I would say that we need to encourage more hunting. The deer number are too high because we have wiped out their natural preditors.

The the other option is to increase wolves and mountain lions.

We have destroyed the balance of nature.

I believe in PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals). They look allot better on the dinner table.

Heard this article on Marketplace on the way home from work and thought it would go well in this thread.

Check out the interactive map to see what's up in your state.

If applicable, bon appetit.

Cool map, but I have questions about Hawaii: How is it ranked the 51st state? And who brought the deer there? I wonder if hawaiian deer carry Lyme disease too, or if they have Pyneapple disease. (rimshot)
