3" rocket with plastic nosecone and 29mm motor mount. Fins and rings are plywood vs balsa and cardstock but the LOC kit is $55 plus shipping.

It's out of stock but $93 plus shipping for a comparable kit. I'm sure I could find lots of other examples if I went looking, these were just the first 2 I looked for.

$50 MSRP for a 3" short 3FNC type cardboard rocket seems acceptable in most cases. And no one pays MSRP for Estes kits. $22 is a killer deal even with the added cost to replace the fins, rings and shock cord.

Putting this in perspective, I just had an order come from AC Supply to Australia. The cost to me for a DBRM, including a proportion of the postage on the order, was $52.47. In AUD it is $76. Just for DBRM. Remember that was with the AC Supply 40% discount on the kit (cost me $36.84) and doing a big order to minimise postage costs.

Speaking of which, what's the deal with charging $24 for a Generic E2X?

In case people in this thread haven't seen it, you can buy twelve Generic E2Xs from Amazon or Walmart for less than double the MSRP of one by itself (albeit, due to an Estes barcode snafu, many people have received Wizards or even Alpha IIIs instead): https://www.rocketryforum.com/threads/generic-e2x-maybe-wizards-we’ll-see-bulk-pack-on-sale.171246/

You do realize the Amazon / Walmart deals are for a 12 pack E2X rockets...
I do realize that when you can actually order those from amazon/wally world and get the correct rocket kits as there’s lots of posts saying they’ve received wizards or alpha III instead of the generic e2x. But I was actually responding to Ronz post about the ridiculous price on the generic e2x from Estes at $24

I'm planning on skinning those crappy balsa fins with 1/32 basswood to beef them up and to give them the proper scale appearance. A stock 3 piece 1/8" balsa fin as big as those is an accident waiting to happen.

My two DBRM kits just arrived. I'm thinking to skin one set of stock fins with carbon fiber and wait for the Citation Patriot Upscale Parts Kit to come back in stock for the other. Carbon over balsa is a great combination when vacuum bagged with proper peel ply and polyfill.

Structural build of the DBRM is complete and the second coat of primer is going on today. I may actually have it ready for an upcoming launch on Saturday. Lugs were replaced with rail buttons and I added a goodly length of kevlar shock cord to the stock kit.
:dontknow:

Given how the weather forecast totally sucks for maple syrup production after today, I may have a DBRM ready for the weekend too. Guess we may have to drag race those and our Krakens if I can make it. 😆 I suspect with the huge warmup coming I'll be spending my weekend cleaning maple equipment so it isn't nasty in case it gets cold again near the end of the month. But, I'd like to fly some stuff.

I noticed a couple areas of deep grain grooves on two of the fins that didn't fill well. I thought the filler/primer might just make for a passable finish but no such luck. I'll need to work in some more wood filler and give it another light primer shot sometime this week. If I make it to the club launch Saturday ( right now the weather looks iffy at best with rain Friday and snow Saturday in the forecast) DBRM won't be making the trip. I do think a trip to Bong is on tap for Thursday though. 60 degrees and light winds looks like a winner!

Hopefully you can get some flying in Thursday. Sunday weather looks good (so far, quite a ways out to trust it too much) for Johnson Creek, but I suppose that's a pretty serious drive for ya.

I did get red paint on my DBRM today. Looks ok. The paper on the fins got a bit wrinkly in spots, so some paint doesn't look the best where my primer sanding made it to the paper, but I think I can sand it a bit and give it another shot and it'll be ok. Might even be able to fly it Sunday.

My Max came today. Took about 2 weeks. I may up grade it to plywood fins.
I have ply centering rings and fins on the way from Rocketry Works. I plan to upgrade the shock cord, replace he launch lugs with rail buttons and replace the Estes stickers with better quality ones from Sticker Shock.

DARN IT.... I'am going to build one 100% completely stock and per the instructions. Just to prove it will fly and recover on the recommended motors, AND USE WHITE GLUE for all but the motor retainer.

Well maybe replace the elastic shock cord...
.
.
Maybe I should paper the multi piece fins...
.
.
Oh yeah, I need to modify the nosecose to get rid of the angled shoulder, add a bulkhead for Eggtimer Apogee.

.
NO...NO...WAIT...."STOCK"....Maybe. 🤪
