No real progress on the build, but I did bring the rocket to the SEVRA launch today to show it off. We had a bunch of Boy Scouts at the launch so I brought it to put on display. I also wanted to see if everything would fit in my little car. :eyepop:

That thing is enormous. Way bigger than my L3 :D

Looks great.

Yeah, here on the east coast, we don't have quite the waivers you do, so making them big keeps em low.

On a related note, I've decided to downsize the test motor. I'll be using the 3-grain L1720. Our summer field is just a little to small for my tastes. I still have the L2375 on order. I'll save it for the winter flying season on our bigger field.

WOW! You fit it in there?:eyepop: I took the booster section to work today to show my boss-he was QUITE impressed BTW- and it will take up about 75-80% of my available cargo area when I take the WHOLE rocket to my cert flight. And this is in a Durango, full sized boat!:eyepop:

So I can get my Level 2 on this thing....hmmmm...Maybe it will be my 18th Birthday present!!!

LOL thats a ways away

My dad thought I was a Loony for buy a $50 "I" motor when his C6-5's cost him $3 a piece!!!

Do we have a paint scene drawn out?

Really?! Mine fits in my Explorer pretty well. Over to one side and I still had plenty of additional room for a six year old, lots of motors, and Dan's rockets and motors.

Was just a guesstimate..Maybe I will load it all up Tuesday and see how much space it actually will take up.Also have to take into consideration blankets and such..Guess I could stack the payload tube on top of the booster section wrapped in blankets...The booster section goes from the hatch to about 2 feet behind the front seats(went about 1/2 way up the center fold down section on the 2nd row seats)..

Blue tape and a blanket are your friend.

Wrap both tubes in a blanket, put a couple bands of 2" blue tape around it, and voila! It stays put. If you have a pretty paint job, it protects the paint, too!

I had to fold the back seats down and put the front passenger seat all the way forward.

Let's see, I had that rocket, a Tethys, G3, two toolboxes, electric drill, box of motor casings, box of reloads, camera and a laptop all in the back. I also put a pillow underneath the fin can to support it on bumpy roads, and covered the whole "pile o' rockets" with a blanket. Then on the way there, I realized I forgot my chair, so I stopped at Walmart. I picked up another chair and the folding table.

That's be a good way to cert in style!

I haven't quite decided on a paint scheme yet. It's going to have flames either way. One possibility would be kind of a tribute to the Tethys I had a few years ago. I loved that rocket. I flew it around 30-40 times in one year. It's now resting peacefully in a tree after a sweet I300T flight.

The other possibility would be more of a hot rod style flame job. It was actually your Up In Flames rocket that gave me that idea.:headbang:

True. As for the test motor, good choice. I like the large White Thunder reloads - they have great mach diamonds:

You're right about those White Thunder loads. I saw one for the first time this weekend. It was an H399 in a Loc EZI. Man that thing ripped! I just ordered about 6 different WT loads. :D

You should fly an M3400WT once you have your L3 (That's the motor in the post you quoted, as you probably know). It's only a tiny bit smaller than the N10,000 (though not nearly as ridiculous) :D

Definitely a great propellant.

Nick, why fit the rocket in the car when you can secure it to the car. The Boy Scouts would love this! :D;)

I threw this together after seeing the pictures. I've been following this thread to learn about building highpower rockets.

This was meant to be fun, but if you want me too, I'll remove the picture.

Man, I love when I open my back door to see a package from Wildman on my porch!

I could do a multi-post unboxing thread ala Art/Kevin, but I don't have the patience for that. :) So here's the pics.

I had originally ordered a Pro75 4-grain hardware set and an L2375WT. Then I decided to use the 3-grain L1720WT with a spacer. Tim called and said he didn't have the 4-grain case or load. Then he talked me into getting the 6 and the 3-grain cases with 2 spacers. Now I can launch everything except for the new 6GXL stuff. :D I also ordered a bunch of smaller White Thunder loads.

Here are a few pics to show the scale of that monster 6 grain case. The rocket in the second pic is my L1 bird. :y:

Yeah. "Talked you into it". Uh huh. Sure. I bet that was hard.... :p

Very nice collection of goodies!

Sheesh! Am I the only one to make any sort of progress this weekend? I didn't actually work on the rocket, but I did manage to convince my TAPs that I know what I'm doing. ;)

It's pretty much done at this point. I just need to finalize the altimeter bay and pop some rail buttons on.

Glad to see that the Ultimate Wildman will fit in a Mazda 3. That is also my rocket transporter of choice and the UL will be my Level 3 rocket of choice.

Zoom-Zoom!!

I just bought a new vehicle, and a Toyota Matrix was one of my options -- it's about the same size as the Mazda 3. I thought about the Ultimate Wildman as I looked at it -- it'd fit, but not by a lot. :)

So the nerves are definitely starting to set in. After following Kevin and Jon's build threads from the beginning, and seeing the results, I'm getting real nervous. I've been down that road before, with two L3 failures under my belt. I can definitely feel their pain.

In other news, I got the N10,000 and Pro98 6G case today. Holy crap it's a big motor!:y: The nozzle alone weighs over a pound.

I'll be flying this beast at Red Glare in Maryland. I'll take Friday to build the motor and do the prepping, and the launch will be on Saturday.

I've had four failures, all different causes. First was an electronics failure -- charges fired before the rocket cleared the pad. Second, I got a main at apogee, and per Tripoli rules at the time, the flight wasn't "as documented," ergo no cert. Third flight, the airframe collapsed on the way up -- I'd obviously damaged it between the 2nd and 3rd attempts. 4th, well, let's just say I planted a rocket tree. :)

Failures happen -- as I told someone else (who unfortunately didn't get his, due to a zipper), once it's on the pad, it either works or it doesn't, and you have to deal with it either way. Fortunately, Clay was disappointed, but he took it well, and is planning for next year.

Now, all that said, have a checklist, so you avoid the simple mistakes. Then, go out with the intention being to have fun, no matter what happens.

Yeah, my flight didn't work. But you know what? My friends gave me 10 minutes of grief over the PA before the button was pushed, and that was worth more than you can imagine!

In rocketry, it's not the flights that matter, it's the people. A cert is a neat thing to get, but in the end, the rockets are what draw us all together.

That looks awesome. Definitely build the motor as long as possible before the flight, and use lots and lots of glue (if glue isn't going everywhere as you're inserting the grains, you're not using enough). Good luck with the cert :D

Wow!!!

That is one HUGE motor.:D

I'd like to see what one of those grains looks like when you assemble the motor.

Good luck on your L3 Nick.:)

I saw the ones for the LDRS drag race being assembled - the cores are almost comically large. It's definitely an interesting motor, that's for sure.

Here's a picture of Tim assembling one of them at LDRS:

:y::y::y:

DANG!!!

That is one massive core. I bet those grains don't weigh a whole lot with a core that big.

Thanks a bunch for posting that.
