Wow that is a big discrepancy. Did you weigh incorrectly or input the wrong numbers after weighing? I can't imagine that the epoxy, fillets and paint account for that.

Yeah I know, 20 lb is huge. Now if I ever want to fly it higher than about 5000 ft I will need to buy some 98 mm motor hardware. I don't know exactly where all the error was. A little of it is that the loaded chute cannon is heavier than original estimate but I can't reweigh all the other individual components now because they are all glued together. There was almost no error in the nose cone weight but the CG has barely changed so apparently the additional 20 lb is not way down in the aft end either. Epoxy and paint would have added a little but not more than a couple of lb I think. Very strange.

Check with Scott before you spend a ton of money on 98mm HW.

Had a flawless first flight to 3270 ft on a CTI M1810 Red Lightning yesterday at MDRA. The chute cannon worked perfectly, recovered without a scratch.

Absolutely gorgeous build and flight Nathan..
I sure am glad I was there for this one yesterday,,

Yeah I got my L3 cert 13 months ago but this was only my second M motor flight.

Congrats on the flight. Another great looking rocket!

Thanks I hope to fly it at Battlepark on a M1770 Skidmark if the mud ever dries up.

Im hoping to see this one fly on a sunny(!) day so I can see if its really purple or not.. Ha!
Nice flight Nathan.

Congrats on the flight.
Compared to your other rockets, this looks like a Spinal Tap Album cover.:)

You have to see it in person on a sunny day to get the full effect of the pearlescent purple. In pictures it just looks black.

Here is a better video of the flight:

And here are some screenshots of the main chute being deployed by the chute cannon. I have to admit, it appears that the main came dangerously close to the nosecone and drogue just as the main was opening.

At 1:04, which is a second or so after the nosecone passes the fincan, it sounds like the nosecone and fincan bang into each other?

Love those big slow and low (Tom Cohen) flights.

I'm pretty sure what you are hearing at 1:04 is the backup main deployment charge from the chute cannon which was set for 600 ft, 100 ft below the primary main charge. There were no scratches or dings at all when I recovered the rocket which wouldn't be true if the nose had hit the fin can. I have another rocket that lost a 1 inch chunk of paint off the nose cone from slamming into a fin.

And the RCO voice you hear over the PA system is Bat-mite.

Nice flight video! That was really great.

It did look like the main deployed pretty dangerously close to the nose cone. I was at a launch last year where there was sort of a freak failure. The main was an iris ultra, and apparently the nose cone came down on TOP of the main chute and got funneled down THROUGH the spill hole! It fouled the chute, and everything came down in a tangled mess.
